Codes - TIC display them???

Codes - TIC display them???
Ok, I'm getting my wrecked 2001 coupe back together, pass inner fender/wheelwell glued on, and I started motor last night! (SWEET).
I've had the battery completely removed for a couple months, and I believe that this will have cleared all codes?
Also, where do I find the "codes" that everyone always talks about showing up. I DON'T mean where do I find them in the service/shop manual. I'm wondering, do I need a "scan tool" to find out what codes my car is setting off, OR does the DIC system display the codes that everyone is always talking about popping up from time to time?
If the codes are displayed by the DIC system, what page/mode or whatever do I use to find the codes the car is setting off?
I can't believe that everyone has their own "scan tool", so I'm guessing that the car actually displays the number "code" somewhere, but WHERE, HOW, and WHERE DO I FIND THEM?

Now, tonight, I'm going to take my pen and note paper, and get a listing of all the codes that have been set off, or are currently being set off. I'm assuming I'm going to have a long list, due to the prior accident, and I'm sure my code "list" will lead to further questions on how to solve problems.
