Noticed when looking at the differences between C5 years. 2002 ZO6 Has factory descreened maf. This is a mod that I performed on previous C4. Is this a easy mod on a c5? Any performance increase or drawbacks.
I did it on mine, but not sure if it helped any. Easy to do, just be careful on not hit the sensing elements. I've since installed a complete Z06 exhaust, Z06 intake lid, K&N, and LS6 intake. After all that, replaced engine with a 2004 crate motor (part no. 89017548) after I hurt my original motor at a track day (over rev on a down shift). Had it dynoed and tuned at A&A and it made 330 RWHP/344RWTQ with no problems from the MAF so I'm happy.
without a PCM tune it will hurt rathter than help. The firmware in the MAF is looking for the slight turbulance caused by the screen. When GM removed the screen, they had a different tune and were able to pick up almost 2 hp on an engine dyno.
Let me ask you this.
I had the car tuned after ECS installed the new cam.
Today I took off the top of the Vararam system to the throttle body to inspect the Air filter. I was VERY tempted to remove the MAF screen. It was right there daring me to. I thought to myself I had the car tuned allowing for more air, but I chickened out removing the screen
Since I had the car tuned when the cam was installed, would I be OK to remove the screen now ?

If you're afraid it will run sh!ty, don't be, you won't notice any difference. Use a dental pick/awl type tool to lever the honey comb out of the grove in the throtle body. Go half way around and it'll fall out.
On my 99 with 30K miles, the screen was starting to corrode and I'm sure it was reducing air flow. I didn't notice any change in the way the engine idled or in normal driving. I haven't scanned/tuned after removing the screen as I'm installing AFR heads.
I keep reading that changing the MAF without other significant air changes is a waste of time and money. I replaced my stock MAF (2000 Coupe MN6) about 4 years ago with a Granatelli MAF + Blackwing, and have since read that I should probably throw it away and put my stock MAF back on. I don't understand why, and the engine seems to run fine? What would be degraded with the G-MAF and how might I recognize it?
I'm not a tuner but you should be OK since they should have richened up your A/F table with the new tune due to the the more efficient intake and cam, so the additional air may not affect the A/F ratio enough to cause the PCM to update the fuel trims.
The degree seems to vary car to car but in general removing the screen would send a lean signal from the MAF to the PCM since there are now more parts of air relative to fuel. The 02s will see the lean condition and richen the A/F ratio by updating the short term fuel trims. Eventually, after 100 miles or so if the lean condition still exists, the PCM will update the long term fuel trims and reset the short term trims to zero.
You might want to talk to the guys that tuned your car about the need for a new tune if you remove the MAF screen.
