I have a 2000 coupe and I hear a plusating grinding noise from the rear but only when the car is turnng. I had the e brake and the diff serviced but the noise is still there. Dealer wants to pull the diff. apart (15 hours) but they can't guarantee that they'll find the problem. Anyone have any ideas?
Mine does that occassionally, going to my Corvette Doctor on friday, To see what is causing this noise, intermittant!! he told me over the phone it "sounds like a backing plate that he can adjust" I will let you know.

Change diff fluid and put in GM additive...Plates are sticking.
Common with all limited slip diffs and should be done every
20-25k miles...George

Mine did this a few times last winter when it was real cold. Only when turning. It went away by itself and I have not heard it since. It did concern me very much at first. I figured if I took it in under warranty the dealership would say" Sorry we could not duplicate the problem".
It makes the noise when turning in both directions although it seems to be worse turning left. There is less than 3K miles on the car since my last diff service. had it done at GM, bill says they used the additive. I took it to the dealer, they said that it wasn't a bearing but I guess that dosen't mean it isn't!?!
Mine is making the same noise. I have a 2004 with only 7000 miles and I never had the fluid changed. I am trying to decide if I should bring it to the dealer or just try changing the fluid. Its especially loud when I am turning and backing the car up when it is first started.
I had the same problem. Went to GM parts department and for $16.00 with club discount. Got Differntial fluid and additive and a screw on filler tube. But 4 oz add in first. I had no luck with other fluids.
04 with 18,000 miles doing the very same thing. I am anxious to see what ya find out. I am also getting a bump once in a while when letting off the brake and before depressing the accelarator pedal.
Does it only make the noise when making a tight left turn???
Don't remember seeing a resolution to this problem, but am curious about the question you posed -- which is exactly the symtom I have experienced (noise only during sharp left turn). Am taking my car to the dealer this week -- any wisdom to pass along on this problem? Thanks
This seems like a common problem. Did anyone ever figure out for sure what was causing it?
I'm gonna watch this one as mine is in right now for axle seal leak........it would be great to get some for sure input while it's up in the air..........
Curious, I have the same problem, I hear a clunking noise when backing out, then it disappears when on the road. Did you ever solve the problem, is it the fluid in the differential? My mechanic said this should not be a problem.
As food for thought: If it is a whining noise that increases with acceleration, decreases with de-acceleration, and, is audible when turning, you may very well have a bad bearing. The wheel hub bearing assembly units are an entire assembly which includes both the bearing and the wheel speed sensor. The specific GM part at a local dealer is quite expensive, and, has a cost that centers in the $400 realm.
However, Timkin is a longstanding o.e. bearing manufacturer. Auto zone carries these very same bearing hub assemblies made by Timkin. Frankly, I had to replace both my rear bearing hub assemblies three years ago at the AutoZone for $125 each (Timkin part #512153). Since then, the price has gone up closer to $150. Do inspect your vehicle. And, do let us know how it turns out for you. Best of luck to you.
