Default Synchromesh ATF

Want to change the oil in my 6sp manual trans, I have a 2000 coupe. The tech "sticky" recommends staying away from synthetics (like Redline MTL) for 2000 and older C5's. Anyway, dealer wants $16.60 per quart for the Synchromesh. Anyplace to get it cheaper?? Need 4 quarts to do the job.

I have used synchromesh in all 3 of my C5's and never had a problem. Definately improved feel and shifting quality. Not sure about where to get it cheaper. Scott

The Sticky states that the Roalpurple scyromax is safe to use.

Manual transmissions -- Replacing the transmission fluid often helps shifting. Early transmissions have paper blocker ring that require Dexron III compatible (usually organic) fluid because some synthetics will destroy the paper blocker rings and subsequently the transmission. Later transmissions, and all rebuilt transmissions, have Kevlar/carbon fiber parts that allow the use of synthetic fluids. I believe the 98-00 transmissions have the paper blocker rings. The safe transmission fluids seem to be: GM Synchromesh PN #12345349, Honda ATF-Z1, Royal Purple Synchromax, Amsoil ATF, O’Reilly Dexron III ATF.

Is that sticky still valid? What is its source? I am running Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF with very satisfactory results.

I read this: Mobil 1 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid

Outperforms conventional ATF and meets General Motors' Dexron® III and Ford's Mercon® requirements. Fully synthetic formula that provides outstanding resistance to oil breakdown and deposits under severe duty and high temperatures.

Helps extend transmission life through excellent durability and protection.

For many GM, Ford and import vehicles. Approved for use in vehicles specifying: Dexron III, Dexron IIIE, Dexron

Now approved for H specification, the latest GM Dexron III performance level.

I put Mobil 1 Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid. I didn't quiet like the way the shifts felt so I drained 1 quart of fluid and added 1 quart of Roalpurple syncromax and the shifts are much smoother
