Had my 2004 coupe in to the dealership to have a fuel pump replaced today. When I got the car back, I had problems getting it into 2nd gear. It would grind and wouldn't engage or I could slip it in but then it would pop out. Immediately took it back to dealer and asked WTF was going in. Tech said that he was having trouble getting it in reverse so he made some "adjustments" (not sure exactly what these adjustments were). I have a Hurst shifter and reverse has been troublesome at times but usually I throw it in 1st before reverse and everything is fine. Anyway, the service writer has the tech take me out for a test ride and to my amazement he has absolutely no problems with 2nd. I tell him to let me try again and I have no problems. OK, I chalk it up to a fluke. After letting the car sit for approximately 6-7 hours, I take the car out for a drive. For the first five minutes I have exactly the same problems with 2nd. After 5 minutes, no problems whatsoever. I'm taking it back to the dealer Mon. morning but just wondering if anyone has any ideas what might be causing this.
Here's an update. Took the car out today (didn't drive it all on Sat.) and there was no grinding going into 2nd. Instead, the shifter felt like it was in second but when I release the clutch and give it some gas it acts like I'm in neutral. It did this for two or three 1st to 2nd shifts and then everything was normal.
When the tech was talking about adjusting my reverse, do you think he was talking about the linkage? If so, could an adjustment for reverse impact 2nd? I am obviously NOT mechanically inclined so ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
Im curious what he adjusted. Im not familiar with the aftermarket shifter, but on the trans itself there are no adjustments. I wonder if he was adjusting the hydraulics.
Another update. 3 days after the original problem with 2nd gear everything is now fine. I'm still scatchin' my head but relieved that everything is now working properly.
well I'm no corvette aftermarket shifter master. But I do know my way around mustangs. Does your shifter have adjustable bump stops? He might had adjusted them in a little too far.

No, that's not it. I removed the stops completely like a lot of other Hurst owners do.
