Default alternator voltage ????

I have a 99 vert a4 I get a charging system fault every so often, I show on the dic I am at 12.5 up to 13 when the vehicle is hot but my volt meter shows about 1/2 to 1 volt more ,when I start up cold I read 13.5 ,but when I put on my volt meter to check the battery it shows 14 or at least 1 volt more on my meter than the dic I check my battery with a load test and it is good what do I do next check alternator, or is there a sensor that is off, I cleaned my body grounds on the front by headlights so what do I do now before I put a alternator in and waste my money ,or is that my problem?

If you are reading 14 at the batt, assuming your meter is accurate, your alternator is good. My guess, if your meter is acurate, is the sensor that the DIC uses is off calibration, or you have a wiring connection that is dropping voltage. Not much help but it is not your alt.

You should read around 13.5 to 14.0 at the batt. with the engine running. The DIC should also read this same number. I have no idea where the DIC gets it's input from but I'm sure your alt. is good and you proably have a poor connection some where in the path that that the DIC is using to monitor this voltage. I'm sure your OK to drive till you get it sorted out..
