I just got back from a great trip to Key West where I'm happy to report every Vette we saw waved!
On the way back I started hearing a drive train whining noise (MN6) That 'seemed' to be coming from under the dash. Here are the symptoms:
The pitch of the whine was dependent on vehicle speed. I could drop from 6th to 5th and the pitch remained the same.
It only occurs when under load. When I let off the gas and coast it stops.
If I push in the clutch it stops. If I push in the clutch and rev the engine there is no whine. Only when in gear and under load.
It is worse around 70-80 mph.
The car is a 2001 MN6 with 40K miles. I never flog the drive train IE. Clutch dumps and tire chirps. I do WOT thru the gears occasionaly but never bang the gears. If I had to guess I'd say it's the differental but I find it hard to believe it's failing after only 40K miles. Do you guys have any ideas? Is it going to continue to get worse and fail? Any help would be apprecated.
Mike
No I don't ride the pedal. If it were the TOB, wouldn't it change pitch with the engine speed like when I down shift to 5th? The engine RPM jumps up but the pitch stays the same until the actual vehicle speed changes.
I've found some other post on the same problem but I don't see where anyone has positively identified what it is from. I thought I'd try changing the rear fluid and see if that makes any difference.
Have you searched about the torque tube,My car makes alot of noise from the bearings in the torque tube when I am WOT and higher in the rpm range.Sorry I misread your original post a TOB wouldnt be like that.Jer.
Maybe gear whine. I have some too in my A4, and it behaves pretty much like you described. Fresh fluid didn't help me, so I turn up the radio a little more.
Is it only at a certian RPM? Mine does this but i read a post a long time ago about the problem being in the intake. A empty void that causes a "whistle" sound at a specific RPM range. Could this be your problem?
I had the same type of noise you're describing.
Heard it mostly at highway speeds in 5th - 6th gear around 60-80 mph.
Only heard it under "load" conditions too, and would go away if I let off the gas. The whining noise sounded as if it was coming from the transmission and transmitting up through the gear shift area.
I replaced my rear end and no longer have this noise!
My suggestion would be to first do a fluid change in your tranny and rear end and see if the whine goes away. If not then it could be the bearings in your torque tube, a bad rear end, tranny problems, ect.
Thanks guys. I'll give the fresh fluid a try first. Has anyone had any luck just having the gears re-adjusted to get rid of the whine? Also, is it just going to get worse until they fail?
I guess if I have to replace the rear I'll have to go ahead and do the 4:10 gears. Dang!
