Default building fuel efficient vette

What would one need to do to push the envelope on building a super fuel efficient vette? I have headers, intake and exhaust but I was wondering just how high could you go? (without going to alt fuels)

I would bet we could clear 30 mpg on the freeway

Thanks

Pete

Hey Pete, if we could get Gear Vendors Overdrive to come out with a unit, they would help your envelope. Of course it would cost 10,000 but that would just be a couple of tanks of gas right?

Not sure I understand the question..... But... I have a cam, headers, intake and some other small mods and average 31 MPG on highway trips, all while getting 385 RWHP or about 438 FWHP. Not bad if you ask me

Depending on your AFR, you can possibly lean it out a bit. C5 typically in stock form run a little rich. But be careful of gas grade.

Right after putting in my heads/cam/headers I averaged 34 mpg at 80 to 85 mph from LA to ABQ, NM. High compression (11.4:1) helps efficiency and mileage.

I would think with your mods you should already be there. I get about 30 mpg hwy stock with 128K+ miles behind her!

Have a good one,
Mike

all 6speed vette's will average over 30mpg from the factory, and that is running on the rich side.

I figured the cam/tuning would be the big factor in mpg, would it correlate that more power necessarily equates to worse mpg? Or is a larger cam more efficient at moving air/fuel so at low rpms they would get better mpg?

Thanks

Pete

I dont know how much you want, sheesh. On my stock 98 with cold air intake and borla stingers I averaged 34 mpg for our WHOLE trip out to Kentucky and back from California.

30+ Highway here too........113K miles.......Vararam.....LT Headers......Stingers......and 4.10's.

Of course......as soon as I hit "the button" the 30 gets cut in half.....

Regardless......we're talking about a car that has 113K miles....can put out 500hp.......can run low 12's / high 11's......and still get 30+ mpg on the highway.

Not too friggen' bad......

In General:
If you grind a cam with less valve overlap (a higher Lobe Seperation), the fuel economy goes up. Also the torque curve goes lower into the RPM range; thus low end power goes up, but top end goes away. Not technically less power, just different power.
(note to the physics guru's: yeah I know.... I'm just generalizing)

You can get an idea how an engine is set up by the relation of Torque and HP. In a high overlap engine, HP is much higher than Torque; for examply the Honda S2000, IIRC has 200hp but 123 ft/lbs. On the other side of the spectrum is, for example, my L98. I have 341 ft/lbs at the wheels but only 213 rwhp. I have more vehicle weight and over twice the engine of an S2000, but I get roughly equal mpg. The LS1 is a pretty good all-around motor, and the hp and Torque being about equal would be a clue to that if you had never seen one.

your AFR at wide open throttle on a stock car might be richer, but part throttle cruising, the computer is triming the fuel so its right around 14.7:1, because there isnt as much load.
