Default LS2 Oil Pan C5 Retro...

Guys...

Can anyone confirm that the new LS2 oil pan will clear a C5 chassis and provide no other additional complications....I "assume" it will but we all know how that can go sometimes....LOL

I plan on bolting it up to an LS1/LS6 style block as well....another "assumption" perhaps?

Anyone have some input here?

Much appreciatted...

Tony M.

We've done these swaps before... The LS2 oil pan, as delivered in the engine crate from GM, will not fit the 1997-04 Y-body chassis.

BTW- Did you get me email?

Hey Phil...

Friday was a little crazy....yes I got it. I will call and discuss it with you next week.

Your response seems to perhaps imply the pan can be modified to fit? Let me know....even if the frame needed minor modification I might be up for it. What is the issue that makes it not a "drop in"?

Thanks,
Tony

The LS2 oil pan has a much deeper sump, (a cross between the truck and F-car pan) therefore reduced ground clearance will be an issue if one tries to use it in the Y-body chassis. We've used the LS1/LS6 Y-body oil pan on the LS2 engine with outstanding success and it has an O.E. appearance.

I have installed LS2s C6 pans with no issues other than the oiltemp sending unit area that easily dealt with. They offer a ton of extra header clearance as they have no gullwings on the sides pan.

Good point.

The oil pans that come with the LS2 crate engines we purchase for our C5 engine conversions are the type I described above, but one could certainly purchase another C6 pan for the retrofit if they chose to. Outside of increased header side clearance using the LS2 pan in the C5 chassis, we couldn't see any *real* benefit of that pan for the additional cost involved...at least for our needs.

Tony, if your car needs that extra clearance for some reason, grab it.

Personally, I think the LS2 C6 pan would be the hot ticket for you turbo guys needing the extra room down there near the oil pan area. While I was with LPE a few years ago as a technician, I built/assembled 11 early twin turbo cars of various stages of performence levels and I can tell you from direct experience, there is NOT any extra real estate down under the car when two hair dryers with their related support components are crammed in between the car's body, the subframe and the oil pan.... I don't know how their doing it now, but I would guess they would have looked at the LS2 C6 pan by now...at least to see if it did actually work. Just a guess...

The LS2 "C6" oil pan is actually the pan I was referencing....I should have been a little clearer. Glad to hear it is able to retrofit into the C5....I might have to consider the swap....I will let you guys know how everything goes.

Thanks for everyone's input....

If/when you perform the conversion, we have the electrical connectors/pigtails you'll need for the adaptation of the LS2 engine to the 1997-2004 Y-body engine harness.
