Default Smaller Diameter Tires - Speedometer is Fine?

I just put on 285/30-18 tires to replace 275/40-18 tires expecting to have to adjust the speedometer. There was no change! The tach and speedometer readings are the same as before. Am I missing somthing or what?

Why wouldn't they be the same? You did nothing to change the relationship between the engine rpm and the axle rpm. Since the VSS is mounted in the diff and is used to calculate mph the speedometer will show no change in relationship to engine rpm. If you were driving a 60s era large Oldsmobile you would see a difference since the speedo is driven off the left front wheel in those cars.

Since your new tires are slighltly smaller in diameter your speedometer will indicate you are traveling several mile an hour faster than you actually are going.

At 70 on your speedometer you will be going about 65.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the help. I will being using a Predator Tuner to correct for tire size. By the way it also lowered the car and looks great. Oh oh, I think I'm getting mod fever. Now what should I do next???

Nope, the car has a VSS. The computer knows the tire change.
