I just received a recall notice for my 99 FRC MN6 for the electronic column lock system. I have noticed some people posting threads on installing a column lock bypass on their own. Do I let the dealer do it, do I install something myself, or do nothing? Any advice out there?
Thanks
Will
GM's "fix" for the problem on manual shift cars is simply to disable the fuel system if the column fails to unlock when the car is started. A4's 2001 and up didn't get a lock from the factory and earlier A4's were either included in the recall or left out there swingin' in the wind along with M6 owners.
My advice is to get yourself a column lock bypass and install it. I've gotten at least three of those notices and just file them away since I've had a bypass for 3 years. Plus, their PCM flash would wipe out my custom tuning.
The dealer will not fix the issue. They are simply reducing their liability by "fixing" it so that should the column lock happen while the car is driving it will cut fuel. It won't stop the lock from happening again, and again, and you needing to flatbed it to the shop. Get the CLB, take 30 minutes, do it yourself, and know it's fixed.
Thanks for the advice and the information that ptdrummer54 posted. Its a no brainer. I will make a paper airplane out of the recall notice and watch it fly out the window right after I have installed the CLB.... ..
Thanks again guys

Absolutely correct. I just installed my CLB last night and it took about 30 minutes. NO DEALERS for this "fix".

Good Thinking!!! The less your car sees the dealer, the less problems you'll have in my oppinion! Not to say there aren't a couple of dealers out there that can handle it, but most fall far short, and besides, that's not a fix anyhow, just covering their "you know what"!
