Default Drag Racing Question

Plan on taking my '99 six speed to Englishtown on Corvette day ( Aug. 6 ). The car is stock and I've not raced it before. If any of you have any experience, I would be interested in hearing if you go through the traps in 3rd or 4th gear. A quick calculation in my head tells me 3rd gear is OK but it will be near the red line. These things have rev limiters don't they? What should I expect for an ET and a final MPH?
Thanks,
VINNY

Shoot for mid-low 13's at 107-110mph. Your 60ft times will be around 2.0 to 2.2 if you have runflats. With a 3.42 rear and a 6sp, I had to shift into 4th right before the traps. Off the top of my head, the stock rev limiter is 6200rpm.

My first few times out I was running 13.5's until I got used to it and then I was then stuck at 13.3 for a while. When some good weather came I knew my car pretty well by then and I got a best of 13.11 @ 110mph. My car always put out a decent MPH, but my problem to this day is getting a good 60' time.

I don't want to get too far off the questions you asked, but I'd suggest a mild tune-up if you haven't done one in a while: Fresh spark plugs, aftermarket wires, clean/new air filter, and a fresh oil change.

You have to shift or you will bounce of the rev limiter. There is a good post from Ranger about how to launch the Z06 I think it is a pretty good post for M6 guys too. Get to his profile and search his posts or just PM him for a link. Good luck.

I just started drag racing and this is about the most reasonable thread that I have read in quite awhile. Don't have high expectations, just go out and practice and have fun doing it. I've been out 3 times and yet to hit a 2.00 60 ft. time, yes I am bummed out, but I still keep it fun.
Of course, now I went and purchsed a Z06 tranny...and some BFGDR's..LOL. But remember if you achieve a 60 ft. time of less than 2.00, don't post it because I'll be pissed..LOL!

good luck.

Agree with mid 13's @ around 107/108 mph. Depending on air conditions, you may be able to run it through in 3rd gear but you'll probably hit the limiter at about 50 feet before the finish line. Probably better timewise than trying to shift to 4th. Have fun.

If you still have runflats I will guess Mid 13's at 107-109 with a 60 of 2.1-2.2. Yes shift into 4th please. hitting the Rev limiter really kills a run. This is why I installed a shift light.

If you have a HUD it has a shift light.

Thanks Guys. No I don't have HUD. ROJO, would it be a breach of etiquette to ask where your shift light comes on? If so, I withdraw the question. Also is your motor stock?
Thanks,
VINNY

How strong is the drivetrain compared to the c4?? I own a '95 lt-1 (supercharged and nitrous) and i have plenty of experience with the c4. But my brother owns a '03 Z06 and i'm planning to make some 1/4 mile passes with it. I want to put MT ET Streets on it but i want to know what do you think. Will the rearend survive??
Anyone has any idea what the car will run??? It's completely stock.

Lots of rearends have been broken with ET Streets. Basically if you cut a 1.7x 60' or lower, don't be surprised if you break your rear end. They are pretty fragile on these cars; I get worried with my high 1.8 60' times!

Most run mid 12's. Little faster with DR's. Some exceptional drivers' have gotten into the high 11's on stock tires mid to high 11's on DRs. Good luck. Click on that link I posted above it is all about how to race a Z06 in the qtr mile. As far as the rear end it's like any other car, might break might not.

I have a stock '98 6-speed with Pilot Sports and went to the strip twice now. Mid 13s and 107mph is a pretty reasonable expectation from my own experience. If you try to make it in 3rd, carefully watch your tach and stay out of the rev limiter...it's ET death.
My checklist was:
1. half tank of gas
2. under inflate your rear tires slightly
3. Helmet = ON
4. Windows = UP
5. Air Conditioner = OFF
6. Radio = OFF
7. Traction Control = OFF
8. Ride Control = Firmest setting
9. Drive around the waterbox not thru it (keep your tires dry)
10. Try to stage first so you have a chance to collect your thoughts and focus your attention ONLY on your own lights and completely ignore the guy next to you
11. Keep your RPM up slightly maybe 2000 RPM; don't go crazy here or you won't hook up unless you have drag radials, but then your stock clutch is a gonner
12. Launch on the last yellow; don't wait for the green light. If you see the green light, you're already late.
13. Stay out of the rev limiter!

One word of advice is if you're still running your stock clutch, don't be surprised if you have some clutch slippage after a couple runs. Mine has never fully recovered and I can't break below 2.1sec/60' until I replace it. BEWARE....DON'T hotlap your car...let it cool down between runs or you'll do exactly what I did...ruin your clutch. Hope this helps. I'm sure there are a lot of other drivers with much more experience than me....read...read....read.
Cheers,
John

Yes, i know that. I've broken my c4 rearend many times, that's the reason i'm switching over to a fully competition 9".

But are these 60ft times achieved when dumping the clutch or let'n it slip a bit??
With your high 1.8's, what's your 1/4 mile et??

Anyways, thanks for all your advises....

Did you install a Dana 44 rear in your C4? I did and one of my friends also did and we never broke them even using real slicks running low 11's
with 1.6 60ft.
But that's all in the past, we are in C5 heaven now.

You should come to Englishtown on July 23 and/or 30 when we run the Corvette Challenge. You could run with all of us OR run in the Test & Tune lanes. Either way, all of us would be there to gladly help and/or answer any questions.

On those 2 days you'd have the luxury of being surrounded by about 80+ other Corvette owners who ALL like helping fellow Corvette owners.

For now, you will be in 4th at the traps and on run flats, 13.5 - 14.0. I say those high times thinking ahead to the weather you will mostly likey be running in at E-Town on August 6. Hot and Humid.

No, it has a D44 w/3.73 already, it's a stick car.
Well, i'm running mid 10's @135mph with my c4. It hasaround 600+ rwhp and with ET Streets, i've broken a half shaft, a spindle and a bunch of heavy duty u-joints.

I'd love to, but my problem is that i live in Aruba, Dutch Caribbean Island, so it would be impossible.

I know that everybody on the CF like helping fellow Corvette owners. In my almost 1 year on the forum i've received alot of help and advises in the c4 section.

You know, my brother has already gone to the track with his car. Did 13.0x at 11xmph. I can't remember the correct numbers, but he had very bad 60ft, think 2.3. That's why i want to put ET Streets on the car, but i don't want to break something, so that he could blame me. I know if the car hooked up better, it would be in the high 12, don't you think??
Thanks...
