Default HID installation ideas

Hi All,
Installing a HID lamp ina reflector built for halogen is a bad idea. It's bright, but it all over the place instead of being where it should be. Blinding oncoming traffic is a bad idea. Even if you are selfish and don't care, think what could happen if the blinded driver loses control and veers into your line.

Anyway, how about ditching the stock foglights and installing this sucker:

Id' just leafe the stock headlights in peace, so you still have the high beams. And either wire the HIDs to turn on with low beams, or use the existing figlight wiring.

Opinions?

As long as you don't mind making your own wiring, brackets and possibly modifying the front air scoops (or Vararam if you have it) and maybe even the bumper, and still possibly losing the easy adjustment of the stock system, then go for it.

If you want a much easier HID solution, wait for Mray to start producing his system. One of his systems is supposed to be a HID high/low system in the popup configuration, with a nonpopup system to come later. The only problem(s) is that he's on the Microsoft release schedule, and he hasn't released any pics...

Why not just buy Euro headlamps?

Euro headlamps are no match for a good (e.g. factory) HID. I am not talking about HID installations in that use stock halogen lenses - they suck. A friend of mine had an audi TT, that I test-drove a few years back. The HIDs are infinitely superior to both DOT- and Euro- spec halogens. There is no comparison.

Euro headlamps shouldn't have even come up since you were talking about replacing the foglights and only using the headlamps for high beams, but since they came up anyway....

Narva 100/130w H4's in Euro lamps put out HID-equivalent output when on high (130 watts). The pattern isn't as good as a designed-for-HID projector though, and the low beam is no match.

An option may be to go with the PIAA 1100xx driving lights, and replacing the bulbs with HID bulbs. It's still a projector, and I believe it uses a glass lens, so if you could find suitable bulbs, it may work out well. As for blinding people, the shrouding provided by the bumper should provide all the glare protection you'd need. You should be able to do it for ~$500.

I saw these before. They were posted the other day, HID fog lamps. Very pricy though.

The Micro DE Xenon Driving Light is the smallest DE auxiliary driving lamp from Hella. It provides surprising flexibility in terms of light placement and gives automobile designers, tuners and do-it-yourselfers a small trend setting auxiliary driving lamp ideal to pedestal mount in the grill, off the bumper, or flush-mount through the front air dam/spoiler.

The Hella Micro DE Xenon Driving Light offers the benefits from Xenon lighting technology in the smallest possible design. This auxiliary driving lamp uses a Xenon bulb mounted in an extremely small, sturdy and temperature resistant magnesium housing with a Magnesium FF reflector that virtually guarantees optimal light distribution. With high light output for more vision and additional range, the Micro DE auxiliary driving lamp shines a light color similar to daylight to help provide the greatest possible safety during night travel.

Hella auxiliary Micro DE (HID) Driving Light kit #74522 includes

Two lamps (2-5/8" H x 2-7/8" W x 5-1/2" D) with black decoration rings, D2S Xenon bulbs and ballasts, soft rubber caps, brackets, wiring harness and relay, easy-to-follow instructions.

I've seen those lights before, but the problem is that you still have to come up with a mounting solution, and the alignment hole for the factory lights is worthless. I know it should be a one time deal to align the lights, but I'd hate spending all the time to get it right.

I did those Hella HID lights in my car and drive around with only those lights on at night. Looks real menacing when coming up on cars with two small bright lights sitting so low to the ground. I had Anger Management Racing install the lights, took Tommy about 1 hr to install them and he basically just modified the existing stock foglight bracket to hold the New HID's in place. All wiring was done to the exsting fog light switch to retain factory appearance. One of my best mods to date!!!
