I notice that most of the hand held tuners (Diablo...) state 99-04 models only.
I assume that the 98's have a different ECU. Is this true?
Would there be any detriment to buying a 98 over a 99. I plan on a few simple mods at 1st and a Procharger later on. So being able to tune it easily will be a must, but Corvettes are quite specialist over here. Not even sure where I'd take it for tune, my local shop is so appaling I wouldn't let them tune a food mixer!
Also is there an easy way to tell the differences. As in the UK sometimes the years get mixed up and a 1998 car may well end up with a 99 registration. (This is just due to how the import regs work I think).
The ECM/PCM is different, but that wouldn't hold me back from a 98' car. Use LS1 Edit or HP Tuners to do any of your programming. I would actually prefer a 98' for your blower application due to the return style fuel system working better (it's easy to retrofit to the 99'-early 03') to return.
Right. It appears that getting a custom tune for a Corvette may not be that easy where I live. The easiest way would seem to be to take it to a rolling road and use a hand held unit like the Diablo.
1. Is the Diablo unit any good??
2. What can I do to check if its a 98 or 99 ECU? Is there anything visible?
3. If all else fails are there any hand held tuners for the 98 models?
98s have the largest injector of any C5 including the ZO6, which means you can do a lot more modding before you have to worry about bigger injectors....

Yep, in fact one of the first things LPE does to 99's and later is put in bigger injectors.

1997, 1998 and 2001 through 2004 LS1s, and LS6s, all had 28.8 lb injectors. 1999 and 2000 had 26.2 lb injectors.

And here is the EASIEST way to tell 97-98 from 99-03 cars (assuming you can look under the hood):
97-98 cars will have TWO braided metal fuel lines connecting to fuel rail on U.S. drivers side (fuel pressure regulator on rail)...
99-03 cars will have ONE braided metal fuel line connecting to fuel rail on U.S. drivers side (fuel pressure regulator in fuel filter under car)...
