I bought my '97 last year with 85,000 mi on it. I think it rides/handles pretty well, but don't have anything to compare it to . Last 'vtte was an '82. Do the stock/original shocks ordinarily wear out within that time and/or mileage. If so what shocks are best replacements for a comfortable ride--no performance needs.
I haven't had to replace mine yet (have an 01 with just over 30,000 on the clock). The last shocks I replaced were on my 93 C4 with 130,000 on the clock. WOW! What a difference! I had forgotten them my C4 handled as well as it did once I replaced them. They were well over due. As for my 01, when I hit 50,000 it is getting new shocks whether it needs them or not.
As for shocks, yes, they need to be replaced. Struts don't wear out as much. When I worked for Honda, the only time we would replace a front strut was if it was leaking or if it was bent from an accident. Honda's struts just didn't wear out. Shocks, are different. They wear out.
ps. When I replace my shocks, I am going to go with Bilsteins. I had them on my 93 (factory) and they were great. They are supposed to be a little firmer than the factory shocks.
Unfortunately I can't answer your question. But, I just replaced my stock shocks with '04 Z06 shocks. The originals have about 6000 miles on them. If you decide to replace your existing shocks with stock, I'll send you my old ones. PM me if you're interested.
