Essentially an underdrive pulley slows down the accessory it's driving, thus using less hp to drive it. You gain a few ponies, but you also risk running hotter and generating less voltage, etc. The pulley will be larger than the stock pulley, thus turning the accessory more slowly.

Not worth the $$ and the heat it causes, IMHO

I agree except for the risk part. I have 0 issues with mine. The only time it's worthwhile to consider it, is when you are doing a cam install. Then it' is no more work, hardly, cause you have to remove the original anyway. Just my .02!

with the right tune I don't think are any issues with the UDP. I would agree though do not change it unless you are doing a cam install.

The "underdrive pulleys" you read about on the forum is nothing more than a smaller crank pulley. Like TheDVS1 stated they reduce the speed of the of the accessories by some percent. The slower the accessories turn, the less HP they will use. I stayed away from them becasue I worry about low speeds running like idling around town.

Actually a under drive crank pulley is smaller to turn the accessories slower. Being the crank is the driving pulley then making it smaller will slow the accessories. If you were changing all the other pulleys (all the driven pulleys) then they would need to be larger to slow the accessories.

That's very true, SpeedyZ. I was thinking about changing the pulley on the accessory, but the proper way to do it would be to change the pulley at the crank, which indeed would have to be smaller. Thanks for elaborating.
