Default TC when I change gears

I am changing my 273 gear for a 342 gear in my A4. I don't race it just want a little more around town. Should I add a mild TC or NO. Should I add a Tanny Cooler or No? Help Help

I am considering the same thing and from what I have read, and there are many threadson this....if you are set on your gears, from what I have read a TC of 2800 is a choice and yes a tranny cooler is nothing but added insurance. From what I have read, you may as well do the TC when you do the gear swap and save the labor cost of having to pull apart for a TC after the gears. And don't forget you will need a reprogram for your new gears. If I am wrong here someone will correct me....

A T/C will give you a bigger peformance boost than just gears. Definately do your T/C and gears at the same time and avoid paying for labor twice if you install them separately. A great street combo would be the Yank SS3200 and 3.42 gears. Install a tranny cooler it is cheap insurance.

Mitch,
I know you generally recommend the Yank SS3200 with the 3.42s. However, that seems a bit much to me and I would think it may feel "loose". What kind of a performance diference would the ProTorque 2600 or 2800 be, with the 3.42s? Thanks!

Mitch is the torque convertor man. He just recommended that I go with a SS3600 with my 3:42 gears because I am installing a fairly aggresive cam in the near future.

Just looking at what stall speed a T/C has doesn't aways tell you how tight or loose a T/C will be. A T/C can be designed to feel tight or loose. For example Yank made 3 different 4000 stall converters that were different in performance and looseness. There was also a considerable difference in looseness between the ST3500 and the SY3500.

The Yank SS series T/Cs are designed to be tight to give you very good driveability on the street. I had the Pro Torque 2400-2600 in my car with 3.42 gears. It was pretty good out of the hole but gave disappointing performance from a roll. The SS3200 is a superior T/C than the Pro Torque's. The Yank SS series is more efficent than a Pro Torque converter. The Yank is a 9.5 inch T/C the Pro Torque is a heavier 10.5 inch T/C. The Yank will out perform the PT2400-2600 or their PT2800 by a good margin from a stand still or from a roll with little or no loss of driveability with 3.42 gears.

do it. 3200 is the lowest stall you should put in. Don't worry about loose -after 4 or 5 drives it will feel natural and great. 've got a SS3600 and it's great for my daily driver.

Along with the YANK TC (3200 or 3600) both of which are very efficient. Absolutely install a cooler. Most of us are running the B&M 24,000 unit with great results. My car NEVER see's more than 165 degree tranny temps.

I dont like the feeling of high stall converters. Seeing that you do not race, and just want a little extra around town. I would suggest doing the gears alone. And don't dismiss the 3.73 either.

If you do decide to go with a high stall converter, make sure that you install a tranny cooler!
