Hi "jjcpj",

The Donaldson Blackwing is a remarkable quality induction product for the Corvette C5. And, one of the best in this very varied category of aftermarket air filtration systems. It is not a wonder that you have not found much info regarding this product on the Donaldson website. FYI, the Donaldson company is a large air filtration system manufacturer that designs, produces and distributes to large government (military) and automotive transportation companies. The Corvette project was an exercise by the company (Donaldson) in an effort to possibly enter a new commercial consumer market (Corvette C5 consumers). However, the Donaldson company has (since the new year) decided to forego any further direct distribution on their part allowing an opportunity for another large parts distributor to release this product. SLP, therefore, has now contracted for the Donaldson C5 Blackwing Air Filter System. And, you may accesss SLP via www.slponline.com. SLP now sells the filter (however, so do many other vendors) and should be able to provide you a copy of the instructions, as well as, replacements clamps and cleaning kits. Moreover, there was, and, is available, an aftermarket "cold air" type box which is mainly a directional shroud cover for the Blackwing. And, both the air filter and the Blackwing shroud cover are available at Ecklers. Refer to Ecklers most recent C5 catalog and look in the air filter systems section: Look for parts numbers 1). #37717 for the '97-'00 Blackwing Air Filter; 2). #40620 for the '01-'04 Blackwing Air Filter; 3). # 44710 for the Blacwing Air Filter Cleaning Kit; and, 4). #45322 for the '97-04 VHP Carbon Fiber Air Force Box Filter Housing designed exclusively for the Blackwing Air Filter. BTW, a lot of R&D has been implemented into the development of this air filter. And, it contains one of the best synthetic media filtration filters in the industry. Jjcpj, congratulations on the purchase of your '03. Please feel free to PM me for any further feedback.

Best Wishes,
Eden

I would also add that TPIS claims to have co-developed this design with Donaldson, but they sometimes call it by a different name. Its on their website, TPIS.com. $250. I ordered one last week for my 2000 coupe. They may be able to help you with more details...

I also had ordred mine from TPIS. And yes the do claim to have shared in the development of the Blackwing. The Blackwing is for life as never needs replacement. It was very easy to install and actually lets you know when it needs to be cleaned w/ a little colored button on the unit.

I also use the Blackwing. I've had mine for over a year and I haven't cleaned it although it doesn't indicate, (by the button), that it needs cleaning. I will have to look into getting a cleaning kit.

Thanks Eden.........

Lots of good info..... I found the cold air box in Ecklers...

Question, however: with cold air in place basically scooping in the air at an increasing velocity matching the cars acceleration... how does that effect the air/fuel ratio and the computer sensors

got to www.ls1howto.com for installation instructions. It is very straightforward. There is a cleaning kit available for $15 from donaldson, but it only needs to be done every 50K miles. Your can cut the radiator shroud for better airflow or drill holes in the fog light housings in combination with the blackwing. There are directions out there to do this but I dont have them at my fingertips now, sorry.

Have had the Blackwing on my Supercharged '01 Z06 for 3 years now and have only cleaned it once (didn't even really need it). This is an excellent buy.
