Here's one for you ignition gurus. I have an ticking/arcing sound coming from coil #3, when you run a cylinder test on EFI Live when it tests that cylinder the ticking/arcing noise momemntarily goes away.
I have replaced the spark plug, no change, replaced the plug wire, no change, replaced the coil, no change.
did that, no arcing visible anywhere. almost sounds like it is arcing inside the boot on the coil. Have replaced with different boots and coils, with the same results on that cylinder.
Your mods are not listed in your profile so I don't know what your running. But if your running headers a lot of times a exhaust leak will sound like a tick. Would also quit or at least be less when the cylinder test cuts that cylinder. Also could it be an injector? Even the worst sounding injector I ever heard was not very loud. How loud is the tick? Can you hear it 3' away from the engine?
Sometime you can take a small hose/tube and hold it up to your ear and move the other end around and listen for the tick. When you get near you will hear it much louder in the hose/tube. May help you locate exactly where the noisy is coming from.
hey SppedyZ,
The car has ported stock heads, Cam, Long tubes, LS6 intake, NOS, LS1 Edit. Checked the injector, that wasn't making the noise.
As soon as you pull the plug wire off of the coil, the ticking stops. It almost sounds like the ticking is an arcing noise inside the boot at the coil. We have replaced the wires with new wires and moved around wires just to see if is was a connection problem.
the ticking/arcing is very loud, it can be heard from more than 3' away over the exhaust. Used metal header gaskets when we installed headers.
