Well, there must be a number of folks ouit there now that have the Callaway Honker installed and running and I am looking for opinions on this intake. I still have concerns about the Hydrolock issue and all, but I would like to hear opinions of the intake and would love to see any photos that we have not already posted. Any issues with water, debris etc? Any gains to speak of over any other intake?I don't want to start another intake war about which intake is best, Im simply want to find out all I can about this one. I know its expensive too, but I really don't care about that either. Any opinions?
I cannot speak directly to just the Honker induction system by itself, I installed their PowerGroup 1 (which includes the honker intake and their Double-D exhaust system) last October to my 2004 C5. I was pleased with the noticable increase in power and the improvement in sound quality. Callaway claims 21 Hp with this package and I think that's a realistic claim; and they have the dynamometer to prove it.
I was very impressed with the people I met at Callaway, and particularly with their engineered approach to improving on the car's design and performance without resorting to quick fixes. Having visited their shop in Old Lyme several times, I added their PowerGroups 2 & 3 over the winter and have been blown away by the car's performance - new heads, valves, cam, throttle body, ignition wires and exhaust manifold, in addition to the Honker intake and Double-D exhaust system can do great things with the LS1 engine. Callaway claims 473 Hp for the package and I do not question it - nothing I've driven comes close to the flat-out power of this car.
Callaway is not cheap, but you get real value for your investment. Their investment in test equipment, CAD systems and most importantly, their people, makes the difference in their products. If this sounds like an advertisement for Callaway, it is - their products and service are first class.
PS: With all that power, I;m glad a upgraded the suspension with Callaway components as well.
you are paying for QUALITY and the CALLAWAY name.it's a good product.i did some looking into it a while ago.i was going to get it,but went a different route(cowl hood).the link up there has good info.Unless you drive thru 6 pounds of water very fast,i don;t think you need to worry about h'lock.

I had the pleasure recently to meet with Mike Zoner the managing director at Callaway. Mike was kind enough to show me around and view the Callaway product line first hand. I can tell you this. The Callaway Honker would be my choice of intakes because of the quality of the filter, the fit of the design and the technology built into it. They move the MAF closer to the intake eliminating the need for a smooth air bridge that can cost hundreds more. The Honker is smooth all the way through. This is a well engineered intake.
Yeh, I have been in contact with Callaway about this intake and I am impressed with them (Mike) that they have been very reponsive in answering my questions. I would really like this intake, but I am still skittish about the water issue. No one yet has shown me any difference between this and any of the other cut-shroud bottom breathers with regards to the water problem. It seems the ones that have hydrolocked have been with this type of intake, in particular the Vortex unit. If I can get over that, I would love to have them do it and tweak the car at the same time. Just watching closely.

I would love to see some pictures of exactly how the water can get up into these systems that cut the shroud. Maybe a shot from under the car looking up at the radiator and shroud. I can't picture in my mind how these systems suck water up...

Well, the "cut shroud" systems won't literally suck up water unless you submerge the front end in water deep enough to hit the exposed filter. However, you can get splashing up against the filter by just driving through puddles, and I suppose if there is enough, the water can get pulled past the filter into the intake. Some people say they drive in the rain with this type of system without problem, others say they have problems....
I ran into a Zone rep a month ago at a dealer and asked him about hydrolock problems. He mentioned the vast majority of these issues were with stock systems when the owner tried driving thru water during a down pour. This occurred most often at freeway underpasses. FWIW
