Default Help wiring a Boost-a-pump

I'm installing a MSD Boost-a-Pump. I need to tap into the wire that leaves the fuel pump relay and goes to the positive side of the fuel pump. I have located the relay in the panel by the battery. It is number 35 (I think.)

So, under that panel where all the wires are, is the one I need to route through the Boost-a-Pump but I can't figure out which one it is. I thought it would be directly under the relay, but the panel does not seem to work that way.

Also will be hooking up a boost gauge and a fuel pressure gauge, so any advise on those items would be appreciated as well.

HELP!! I need to drive my car!! I'm having withdrawal symptoms...

Don't you just love how some IDIOT can get on this forum and ask some ridiculous question like "how do I open my center console all the way?" or "how do you open the fuel door?" or "what's a hood seal and how much horsepower does it add?" and they get 300 responses!!

Ask an intelligent question however, when you really need some help and the forum is like a GHOST TOWN!!

Well, now that I've vented... Nevermind. I figured out on my own.

THANKS!!

Not sure what year yours is, but on an '04, the positive wire going to the fuel pump from the relay by the battery is the grey wire just under the relay and towards the engine a few spaces.

How did I find it? Well, get yourself a multi-meter that will check continuity. Then, take off the drivers side rear tire and remove the plastic inner lining (pretty easy). Once that is off, you'll see the connector in there for the fuel pump. Disconnect it.

Now that the pump is disconnected and not "looped" back to the relay, you can check continuity and find the wire you need.

Back up to the fuse box by the battery. Remove the fuel pump relay. Now you can stick one end of your multi-meter probe into the top of the housing and poke around on the wires underneath with the other probe until you get continuity. The directions that came with the MSD Boost a Pump will tell you which post on the relay to tap into.

Yellow C5;

You have a couple options. 1) you can acquire all your model year wiring diagrams by signing up on AllDataDIY.com. This will lead you to the wire color you are looking for. Or, 2) there are cool slide on piggy back connectors that you can buy at NAPA or any local parts stores. This cool connector crimps onto the end of a wire, then the end of the connector itself slides onto a post of a relay then you plug the relay back in. Boom, you're done. Run the wire out from under the Fuse Panel Cover on out to the MSD BAP.

PS- I looked up the wiring schematic: the 12vdc Fuel Pump RElay Control signal from the PCM to #35 Fuel Pump relay solenoid is a Dark Green wire with White stripe, the ground for the other side of the solenoid is, of course, Black. The solenoid closes the Normally Open contact side of the relay to supply 12vdc to the pump, which comes out on a Gray wire (probably the wire you're looking for). F/PMP fuse #13 is the power source that comes out of the relay on the Gray wire. Keep in mind that fuse is 20amp rated, so if youre driving more that an amp or two you will want to install a 25amp fuse.

Last dyno run was just over 500 rwhp. On that run, it was starving for fuel right at the top end. The boost a pump should take care of that. Since the fuel was only an issue right at the top end, I don't think I'll take it up for another dyno run. This is a stock LS1 with just a ProCharger, bigger injectors, Corsa exhaust and a custom tune. The car has a lot of mods, but those are the only performance ones.

I pretty much baby the car. Never been to the track. But it's got enough power to be a BLAST to drive and that's all I'm after!!

Mounted mine inside where the battery goes. In between the power distribution box (fuse box) and the divider that separates the battery area from the engine. Mounted it right on that divider. I could send a picture if you like.

Did you run wires all the way back to the fuel pump or just use the existing fuel pump wire?

I ran it all the way back. The existing wire was a lot smaller gauge that what comes with the MSD unit. Since it is designed to put more voltage to the pump, I didn't think it would be a good idea to use the existing wire and put more voltage through it than what it was designed for. Although I know some people that have done it that way and got away with it. I wanted to get full value and use out of the unit.

I ran the wire across the firewall, then (with the drivers side front and rear tires and inside panels off) dropped it down the drivers side of the engine compartment. From there, look in the front wheel well back towards the rear of the car. You'll see a perfect little channel that runs right under the door sill to the back of the car. Wire will come out the back right by the fuel pump connector! Perfect length too.

Thanks. I got the magnacharger installed today. All I have left is the MSD and fuel and boost guages...Hopefully I will get it tuned one night this week...

ChrisWtx -

Sent you a couple pictures showing where I installed it.

I installed guages too. Pictures at:
http://sunflower.com/~sharolynr/DSC00064.JPG
http://sunflower.com/~sharolynr/DSC00062.JPG

Actually, there are a TON of pictures of my car by going to
http://sunflower.com/~sharolynr/vettepics.htm

While you have that drivers side front wheel and inside panel off, there is a perfect place to drill a hole that will come out inside the "dead pedal". Then you can run your wires and tubing for your gauges. I went that route because I did not want to use that cheap plastic hose that comes with the boost gauge. I got a copper kit from a local auto parts store.

Good luck on your tune! You'll be VERY happy once it's all working right. Mine runs FANTASTIC!

Thanks. I hope it puts out the numbers I want. i'm shooting for 500rwhp. I was at 400rwhp with the cam and headers. So I'm hoping for 100rwhp more with the Maggie and smaller 3.1 pulley running 7-8psi. We will see later this week...
