New owner of 2000 C5. Runs great but I am confused by the MPH light in the center of the speedometer. It lights up after the car is warmed up and stays lit, but will then go dark only to return a little while later. Thought it was part of the active driving but could not find any reference in the manual. Am I missing something? And why would it come on and then go off at times??

Tells you if you're running US or Metric (changes to KPH if you switch to metric). Why yours is going off and on? Don't know.
Their isnt a light behind it.... I had my cluster apart to install my guage bezels and there are 2x 3" blue bulbs in the sides of the cluster. Your guages will appear to be lighter or darker if your guages are in direct sunlight.
Thanks... I will check that out but it seemed to be very visible when I was sitting still in the same place. Is this something to do with the active handling and the dash lights being on??

Uhhh Sorry but wrong. Either the MPH or km/h will be illuminated (like a dummy light except light blue) depending on whether you select English or Metric on the DIC.
The small photosensor on the top of the DIC buttons controls the intensity of the illumination - I believe it's Brighter in the sunlight and Dimmer at night.
Here's the excerpt from the 2K owner's manual (pg. 2-73):
Speedometer and Odometer
Your speedometer lets you see your speed in either miles
per hour (mph) or kilometers per hour (km/h).
You may note that there are not two separate scales
for mph and km/h. When you press the E/M
(English/metric) button on the Driver Information
Center (DIC), the cluster will calculate the proper speed
and move the needle to the correct position. Either the
MPH or the km/h telltale will illuminate, depending on
which measurement you choose.
