I've heard of some people putting tennis ***** or weights or other things around the hurst short shifter to quiet it down. Exactly how is this done? Any writeups on this can someone give me some instructions?
One easy modification to help the Hurst shifter rattle is a heavier shift ****. The plastic/leather OEM piece is very light and tends to transmit more noise/vibration.
Different solutions work for different people. I'm using a combination of PVC end cap and a Hurst billiard ball shift **** with the threads of the shifter wrapped in electrical tape. The stock ****, MGW pistol grip that Shylor mentioned and the C6 **** all produced way too much noise for my setup.

I did the tennis ball trick along with placing a thick piece of foam back inside the console directly behind the shifter. If you pull your shift boot off, take it out for a ride. While driving place your hand over the opening to the rear of the shifter. Most of the tranny noise comes from the rear.

What is the tennis ball trick and how do you do it?
I'm on my 3rd Hurst shifter that I've installed in 3 different cars and I've never had one rattle on me.
Do you accelerated aggressively with the Hurst shifter? That was the only time I experienced the Hurst rattle. Otherwise it was a quiet as the stock shifter.
Yes there were only a limited number of all black MGW pistol grip ***** made. I encouraged George at MGW to make some because I really wanted one in all black. I painted the shift pattern emblem on mine black to match it.

Derek why are you selling yours?
I realized that I don't personally like the pistol grip feel. The MGW shift **** is top quality and looks great.
Don't cut the tennis ball in half. Cut a hole in the top and bottom, then slip it over the shaft. I did that when I had my stock shifter causing noise or rattle problems and it went away.
Go to your local home improvement store and buy a 2 two inch Fernco brand rubber pipe plug in the plumbing isle. $2.00. Remove the shifter **** and boot. Cut a hole in the pipe plug with an exacto knife large enough to accomodate the shaft and slip it right over the base.
I think that this will work better than a tennis ball.
I got this idea from Patches as he describes it in his shifter install.
