i just got a quote from my local dealer for $1500 to do a clutch swap, including new disc (z06) and pressure plate and resurfacing? the flywheel (if it needed it) and all the labor.
and it's an '03 so i already have the "upgraded" slave.
this would be my first manual so as far as the tranny goes I'm still in the learning curve .. so .. would this quote be high?
You can get an entire aseembly with new flywheel/pressure plate/friciton disc from clutch masters (i think thats the name) in Charlotte, NC for fairly cheap. I think I spent around $500 which included having it overnighted to me..maybe a little more. $1000 for labor is pretty high IMO, a dealership can do it in a few hours if they're anywhere near competent.
I'd take it to him then. I haven't heard too much about the LUK unit, which is probably a good thing... How much power you putting down?? The stock Z06 clutch is consistently of high quality but not all that strong...if you aren't doing any crazy driving I'd reccomend it

well i usually enjoy high speed/rpm shifting .. i.e. cruisin down the highway @ 80 kick it into 3rd .. that has to be my favorate thing in the world to do .. granted i'll put the clutch in and rev it up first but still i dont imagine it's too healthy on the car.
and i occationally take it to the track .. once every few months and make only a few passes .. so not a really track star or anything .. and as for power right now i'm more or less stock .. got the exhuast done up (x back) and an intake but this clutch will be there when i do other things to her
she's more of a DD than anything else
.. but then again my daily driving could be considered driving on a race track.
the guy on the phone was telling me the clutch is made by the same people that make the z06 clutch or made it ..said it was a good clutch for the money. but i always need a second opinion on things of that nature.
From what i've read, he's telling the truth... I'd probably go with his suggestion, ask for a total price of all parts/labor if you decide to go with his clutch. Probably a good path to take...
I have that and it is much better than stock. I hear too many people complaining about the stock clutches so IMHO it seems foolish to replace the stock clutch with another stock clutch.

the rps is out of my price range .. for that I would go w/ the LUK pro Gold .. even that is pushing it.
kyle if im not mistakin LUK makes the stock clutches for many cars, might even make ours, im not 100% sure though. they are a good clutch, i had one installed in my 95 Z28 with 330rwhp. it held fine. good clutch for the money. but the Z06 setup (any C5 01+) is pretty cheap. i would just do that. unless you plan to go with some pretty big mods in the near future, then i would look into spending a little more and upgrade
The LUK clutch is the factory Z06, Andy sells them for $330 at Carolina Clutch. This inlcudes disc, PP and FW. $330 is a great price and Andy is a great guy to deal with.

yes, you are correct LUK made our clutches.
what would you call "major mods"? .. I've got a few ideas in my mind .. wheather they come to light who knows.
But i'd hate to have to go through another clutch job cuz i went too low. The Z clutch is rated at what, 420 if i'm not mistaken. I'd be running hopefully at least that.
i liked the thought of the LUK cuz it's got the same characteristics as the OEM but can handle more power.
FYI Luk is also the new clutch kits autozone sell under their name (duralast). So give them a call and ask for a new clutch kit. It has a lifetime warrenty and is made by Luk
I got over 150 1/4 mile passes with 5000 rpm launches on ET streets. My car dyno'd at 370rwhp with a CAI and catback and ran 11.6@118 and is my DD too. I got waaaaaaay more out of it than my Exedy-it took a **** with no more than 25 1/4 mile passes and none were 5000 rpm clutch drops! Get the LUK, change the clutch fluid every week, if you want more power buy the new Z06 and don't mod it, just get an extended warranty and never worry about it!

its just something to look for the future. you arent going to want to go through it twice. if your talking 420rwhp then i would def. upgrade from the stock clutch.
im only at 382rwhp, and will be doing heads in the next month or so. everytime i get on the car i worry about the clutch. it already sticks to the floor, and this only started after the cam install. im going to go with that aussie clutch and forget about it!

dont take this the wrong way... but if your still having trouble driving on the stock clutch, then you might not even want to consider anything else. the high-hp clutches are a little more difficult to drive.
