Default Locked Steering Wheel

When I went to start my car, the steering wheel wouldn't unlock. It started, but the display said, "Service Steering Lock." I couldn't turn the wheel. Has anyone ever heard of this and how expensive is it?!?!?! Thanks for the help!

keysboy,

You can try this too. Put the key in the ignition and turn it on, but don't start. Turn the wheel a little to the right to where the wheel "locks", then give the wheel a quick yank to the right. It should "un-pop". I had to do this several times until I could get a bypass relay kit.

The relay kit keeps the column lock from engaging and
there might be a Tech note at the forum on how to install it vs. going to the dealer. It's pretty easy and my kit cost $100 (for a relay and a connector...go figure!).

Hope this helps.

Default Thanks

thanks a lot. however, i already had it towed to the dealer yesterday! I think that b/c it was a recall they are going to fix it free of charge. (fingers are crossed!) Either pay my tuition or have my vette fixed....thats a no brainer!!!

Ahhh most people don't take it to the dealer cause they DO NOT FIX it..
They just reflash the PCM.
If it happens a second time, they may remove the locking plate( if it is an auto) IF it is a mnual there is no dealer fix. You need to install a CLB
(column lock bypass) form either Thunderracing.com or Corvettesofhouston.com

Do educate yourself by reading the sticky. The prefered member fix costs $49....
