Short shifter install issue

Short shifter install issue
I just installed the B&M shifter (new model) and I got everything back together when I noticed an extra piece. I have an "L" shaped metal piece about an inch long with notches on the long side of the "L" left over. It does not appear to be a part of the stock shifter which leads me to believe it belongs on the car. Do I need to pull it apart to reinstall the L ? I would hazard a guess that it came out when I pulled the stock shifter out and I did not notice it. The new shifter seems to work fine but I am not sure I want to take it on the open road until I find out what this it. and it will go into reverse.

If you're referring to the L-shaped pin in the pics below, it is the shifter neutral lock pin from the stock shifter used to adjust the shift linkage when in it's the down position. Most aftermarket shifters have no provision for storing the pin so you just store it away until you need to adjust your linkage.

BTW, if you should happen to lose this little item, don't sweat it. An 1/8" drill bit inserted upside down will fill the bill nicely too.
