I'm certainly no newbie to the world of engines, but this is the first time I've ever seen one of these puppies. Very interesting thread, and I will definitely consider one. It appears to just install inline with the PCV, which must be fairly simple - right?
Exactly, I am also wondering how hard the install is on of these things. I am seriously considering getting one, especially with how drive.
I just did this mod..... I used 2 husky air compressor filters, cost me 1/8th of the AMW taxed can. Sorry but I can dump the cans from time to time to keep up with the oil.
After reading many posts about oil catch cans, I decided to bite the bullet and I purchased one from Accurate Machine Works a few months ago. It is an extremely high quality piece that looks great in the anodized red...with my mag red 04 coupe. I installed the can with 2500 miles on the clock and I took a look at it today with 5900 miles on the clock. Here's what I found (the picture's pretty big so I just posted the link to it):
There was about 3/4 of an ounce of oil in the can! I decided to remove the throttle body to take a peek into the intake and it was spotlessly clean. Now...I don't drive my car hard at all. In fact, it's had only one hard run. A few weeks ago I had it on a dyno and that's the first time that the car has been run to the redline.
Botton line? If you don't want oil in your intake, get a catch can!!!
glad they work if you need'm, Mine is white glove clean, even on the back of the blade, cleaned it @15k, didn't need it
Not sure I understand why you are removing the filter element???
Isn't that what the oil vapor is going to condense on????
Also..having a 2004 do I just plumb the hose going to the airbridge from the valve cover? Isn't the PCV hose a different one???
DH
honestly I don't think you need the filter to catch the oil. The oil will not make it from one side of the hose to the other side with the jar in the middle since it is too heavy.
The reason I did it this way is because I saw the same exact setup this weekend at Pocono Raceway. The guy (a Z06 owner) showed me it filled at the end of racing. I was surprised how much oil he trapped. I just did mine the other day and I am going to the 1/4 mile track tomorrow so I can give feedback then.
and yes the PVC is the lower hose. I also questioned why not the lower hose and the answer basically was that the upper hose was going directly to the TB and this would caprute all that oil. Also If you noticed that it was filled all the time then you would have to get a better unit that did both the lower and upper hoses.
BTW - I added pictures. I goof earlier....

Well, I think my rings are going... I installed my CC on Staurday. The car had been smoking a little, so I figured my rings were starting to go. I drove about 25 miles after the CC install, and this is what I had in the can:
Time to start thinking about forged pistons this winter.
