it's been 5000 mile since my last oil change. the car reads 33% oil life, but the change oil sign / check oil sign has not showed up yet. i'm going to change it this weekend anyway.
question at what % does it show up?????
Not sure at what %, but I change mine based on my driving style no matter what the DIC says.
First I always change it before I put it away in the winter and after about 1 month after taking it out of the garage in the spring. Throughout the spring, summer, fall I might change it a few more times if I am racing a lot.
For instance I changed it about 1 month ago and then had 6 runs at the 1/4 mile and 4 - 25 mins runs at Pocono Raceway. I felt that was enough and so I changed the oil. the car might have had about 1000 miles total on that oil.
I am still getting oil cheap at Pep-boys so it really is not that costly for me to do it. I also ordered a case of filters from fredbeans so they are just sitting there waiting to be used
I ignore the Oil Life indicator and change mine at the standard 3000 mile interval. I'll let it go longer than 3 months, but not longer than 3000 miles.
This is with Mobil 1 of course.
May be overkill but safe is better than sorry on a $45,000 car.
I believe the OM (Owners Manual) indicates that the DIC will display: Change Oil Soon around 12 - 15% and the Change Oil Now message displays at 0%. Wait for it! No need to change oil sooner unless you drive in dusty conditions or race it.

The service manual is not specific - it will say "change oil soon" when it's almost time, and "change oil now" when it's time.

The computer will monitor you driving style and habit and will compensate, using the percentages as a guide for oil replacement. The oil you are using may last 7000 miles depending how you drive it.
that being said, it doesn't start telling you to change oil soon until 5 or 10% life remaining.
GMs oil life monitoring system is complicated, its not just the old odometer style system that just takes into account mileage. this system takes into account temperatures and rpms among other things. its algorythms were developed along side the LSx engines and it is perfectly find to run it down to 0% oil life remaining. people have had oil tested at this point time and time again and always find that it has plenty of life left.
changing oil at 3k miles is a complete waste of money and oil for these things isn't cheap.

There seems to be two camps... \One that says "Ill change it every 3000 miles ...
The other says Mobil says you can go ten to fifteen thousand miles with their synthetic oil..
Ive been there, done the research, seen the results. Two years in development before launch, The oil life monitor system is designed specifically for your Car. You can bank on it's reliability. Test where done over two years to develop the algorithms. The monitor system works.. and it's even generous in its readings, meaning it actually warns you earlier than it has too.
You can throw away your money, listen to grand pop, you can even use an outhouse to take a dump, that is, if you want to use yesterday's technology..
Use the monitor right down to 0% or one year which ever comes first, and your engine will be fine.

Mine is getting changed tomorrow after roughly 9000 miles on the clock. The DIC says 5% left. The oil still looks clean. I change it when it tells me to. Others however, will not agree.
Between 0% and 10%. I start planing when it gets under 10%, becayse I know it will take a while before I all the stars are in alignment and I can get to it. Don't change it early (unless hard and dirty). Life is short. Drive it, don't lay under it!

but, if it makes you happy, go for it
To each his own of course..but why would GM invest the time money to put this system in the car. I go by the DIC too.
