Default Need a good transmission cooler

Ran my A4 vert at track trials this past weekend. With the ambient temperature close to 100 degrees I had to pull off after 3 laps on the second session when the trans temp hit 270 degrees! Are any of you track rats using a trans cooler that's effective????

Did your warning lights come on or did you just monitor the temp?

I ran at the track with ambients in mid 90's and saw 240-250 tranny temps....with a cooler.

I have the Setrab, don't know the specs.

I'm puting in a FLP tranny and 2400 stall TC on saturday. Then hitting WSIR for a track day end of next month. I'm hoping it doesn't over heat..

Doesn't the DIC start complaining at 250 degrees?!?

It does on mine and then turns on the tranny overheat display. From past experience go with the biggest cooler you can on a A4 tranny car. When hand shifting on a road course with lots of WOT the A4 generates heat.

The ATF starts to cook at 225-235 degrees so you want to keep it cooler than that at the least and the cooler the better. A B&M 70264 (6x11x1½) is better than nothing but too small to do the job on a road course. You might be able to get away with the B&M 70266 (½ NPT fittings, 8x11x1½) or B&M 70270 (same but with hose & clamp installation kit) but I would use the B&M 70274 (½ NPT fittings, 11x11x1½).

The coolers that use ½ NPT fittings, can be adapted to barb fittings to use with rubber hose and clamps, but if your like me then you’ll want the security and looks of stainless steel braided lines. If so, this is what you’ll need to hook it up to your transmission lines:

You can get all of the Aeroquip parts and the B&M coolers from Summit Racing.
Note: Summit puts a prefix in front of the number (AER-) for Aeroquip and (BMM-) for B&M

(2) Aeroquip FCM2013 –6 AN to ½ NPT male adapter (cooler)

(1) Aeroquip FCM1022 –6 AN 45* swivel hose end (trans return line)

(2) Aeroquip FCM4032 –6 AN 90* swivel hose end (cooler)

(1) Aeroquip FCM4042 –6 AN 120* swivel hose end (radiator)

(2) Aeroquip FCM2108 –6 AN to 5/8 –18 inverted flare adapter (radiator & trans return line)

(1) Aeroquip FCA0606 –6 AN AQP racing hose, 6ft.

(1) GM # 442338 (or similar) 5/8 –18 inverted flare female union (trans return line)

Aeroquip website: http://www.aeroquip.com/pages/lit.html

You can also use Aeroquip “socketless” hose and fittings that are easier to assemble than those above.

B&M uses ½ NPT, female fittings on their coolers, others may be different.
GM used the 5/8 –18 inverted flare fittings, through at least 2000, maybe later, and then it was changed to something else.

In addition, to mount the cooler on your condenser, you’ll need a mounting kit such as Summit’s SUM-G4990
