Tune question
Could someone explain to me what a tuner is doing when he "tunes" the motor? I know he's adjusting the fuel maps, right? But how is he doing this? How is he measuring the state of tune (rich/lean) and how is he modifying the PCM programming (with a computer connected somehow to the car?)? And how do they know how rich/lean to program it?

the tuner does nothing physical to the engine. He connects his computer, which has a "tuneing" program like LS1 Edit installed , to the OB II port on the car. His computer is now able to scan your factory tune in your PCM ( usually this is the only computer he will "tune" ). Useing his program he can modify various performance related settings in your tune. He can change shift points ( for A4's ) , fan turn on, turn off speeds, A/f ratios , Timming etc.How much he can do depends on how many mods you've made to the car- but even a "stock" car can benfit from a good tune by a tuner who knows what he's doing. If you need more specifics on what can be done go to LS1Tech and monitor the Scan and Tune Forum. We have one here on Corvette Forum but they go crazy with this stuff on LS1 and they know what they're talking about.
