Can anyone recomend an excellent quality transmission temp gauge to install for a 6 speed manual along with a general overview on how to set it up. Anyone with pictures on their set up?
However, since the DIC gives you a temp read out for the M6, that tells me there is a temp sensor installed on the trannie. Therefore, Im certain you can tap that temp off the sensor and use it for an additonal gauge. Most likely a very simple install if one really wanted to do this.
Mine was converted to a 6 speed so I'm not completely sure, but I know mine doesn't show a temp for the tranny, only oil and water...I've taken the transmission out myself and never saw any connection for a temp sensor, only reverse lockout solenoid and 2nd gear block thing...

Man I was wrong. I just went out to my car and I had misstaken the oil temp read out on the DIC for the nonexistant temp read out for the trannie.
Thanks for your post post on whether there was a sensor or not. Made me go out and look.
I was wrong. The install of a gauge might not be as easy as I mistakenly mentioned.
Again thanks.

Someone asked this recently in the tech section. Basically, the A4 and the Z06 have tranny temp sensors. The A4 can be read at will while the Z06 M12 tranny sensor will throw a warning on the DIC if a critical temp is reached. The MN6 has no provision for a tranny temp sensor.
The Z06 sensor replaces the fill plug on the driver side of the M12 tranny.
Typical Airplane Driver, not happy unless he knows that everything is working as normal.
Might be able to adapt a sending unit to the tranny filler plug as long as it didn't touch internal parts when seated. If it works, you could probably do the same thing to the differential.
I see you live in dallas and used to design interiors for aircraft.
You didn't by any chance work for Associated Air Center at Dallas Love Field did you?
I used to work for them as an aircraft mechanic on the heavy jets in my very early twenties. Someday I might make the move back to Dallas. Always enjoyed the misquite bar-b-q.

Do you think this temp sensor at the oil filler will fit on the MN6? Do the M12 and M6 share the same oil filler plug thread size and diameter?
I guess I could go looking for the answer on the post you mentioned but sometimes they are hard to find. Forgive my laziness.
Pretty sure they are the same thread. The trick would be how to implement it. If you want a DIC readout, that may me tough. But pulling a harness from the tranny to a dash gauge woudld probably be doable.
The sensor on the Z06 tranny will come on when it hits 266 deg. It is an idiot light. Not much use. The LS1 tranny should have the same provision since the export version has this freature also.
Could you buy the ZO6 6 speed plug with the sensor, remove the sensor, install a new sensor and wire it for a regular tranny temp gauge such as AutoMeter makes. Or drill the plug you have now and install a sensor as long as it does not hit anything internally. Looks do-able.
I had a GM T-1 manual transmission cooler installed and was told it comes with a thermostat that can be used to activate the pump - or you can run a switch to the pump and control it manually, which is what I did. I ordered a transmission oil temperature gauge from Autometer to be installed in a piller mount. We'll see how that works out.
