My HVAC fan is making an awful screeching noise so it's time to replace her. Has anyone done this before? How difficult is it? I must confess I'm not sure where to even start. TIA!
Assuming you mean the blower fan motor, it's not hard at all, at least on my '00 hardtop. The blower is located behind the glovebox area. Pull the vinyl kickpanels off and you'll see it. I don't remember the details (check your service manual), but I don't remember much in the way of tough obstacles.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike
Yes, that's the one I'm talking about. Sounds do-able if it's accessable by just removing the kick-panel. I don't have a service manual.
As I recall once the kick-panel is out of the way the most difficult parts is unplugging the harness to the motor…
In fact you may find in removing the blower fan motor that the screeching you hear is a result of something in the fan itself, like debris and the blower motor is fine. While you have the fan out, look carefully for evidence of water getting on the motor. (Rust, etc.)
The evaporator is located inside the box to the right (and below) of the blower motor and when the drain gets plugged, these can fill with water. This will of course leak into the interior (and down onto your BCM-you're gonna love that!) as well as the blower motor. It is probably a good time to fashion a small flexible hose to the end of your vacuum cleaner and vacuum out the box. A clean piece of heater hose taped to the vacuum's hose should get in there and pull out any debris that can end up plugging the drain. It's just a bit of preventative maintenance since you already have the blower motor out..
