idler pully help
I have owned my 2001 C5 for 3 months now and it has been towed 4 times. computer failure , steering locked , bad battery that gave me so many other codes and crazy light shows etc.
now my new problem is a very loud noise from the belt area at any RPM over 1500. when I start the car it is real bad but gets better as it warms up and RPM kept under 1500 [ KIA's are passing me! ]
so my poorly worded question = is the idler pulley another frequent problem and how hard is it to replace.
I cut a piece of garden hose and listened to each part and it seems the idler pulley is where all the noise is coming from.
is there a frequent failure section anywhere on this forum? and perhaps a do and don't thing on how to replace these parts?
I just ordered this pulley for $44 from the chevy dealership and can only hope this is the problem. any help will be GREATLY appreciated as I am seriously considering selling this car. I only have 24,000 miles and bought it with 21,000 miles , it has been worked on more hours than driven , I am so bummed out
First step is to check belts. spray them individually with some soapy water. If it is a belt, the squeals will stop with the soapy water.
Next you need to isolate which system of the two systems is squealing the serpentine belt or the A/C belt.
Did you take the A/C belt off and see if it went away?
If it does it is on the A/C belt.. either the idler pulley, the tensioner or as in my case the compressor.
If it doesn't then it is on the serpentine system.
with the belts off and the engine cold reach in and pull on each of the pulleys... is there any play or wobble... or if any of the pulleys does NOT spin smoothly and freely but feels gritty or grinding...
that one will be your culprit.
Good Luck
