I was racing an SCCA race this weekend and I spun. I restarted the car and the DIC read "reduced engine power." The engine would not rev at all whether in gear or not. I got back to the pits and nothing appeared wrong. I restarted the engine and all was fine. It was a very hot day and engine oil temp was at about 298 degrees.
Was this a computer glitch or maybe a "self protect" mode?

Just my opinion but I think it went into what you called 'self-protect' mode - how hot was your coolant? I race a bunch (I've gone off the track a bunch too!) but have never seen this at the track. A knock sensor will induce reduced engine power as will incompatibility between pcm and bcm - but neither of those cases sound even remotely close to what you're describing.......
All of your replies may apply. Oil temp was about 300. I did put the throttle down to control my spin (It worked as I did a 360 and was pointed where I wanted to go) so maybe the traction control had a role (although I turn off traction control at the start of a session), and maybe my throttle input during the spin caused a "runaway" response from the computer.
Just glad it wasn't something more mechanical and costly.
