I've had some issues lately with one side of my B&B PRT quad tips sagging no matter how much I crank down on the C-clamp. I have it maxed out right now and I nearly stripped out an old clamp I had. In fact I had to have B&B send me a new clamp/bolt which I put on, still w/ some sagging after I take her out for a spin. Initially I get a nice alignment between the two pair of tips, then after I go for a hard pull, the driver's side tips sag down.
Anyone ever had this problem and how did u fix it? I'm thinking of getting a welder to spot weld the muffler/tip section to the over the axle pipe.
Thanks for any info on this one.
B&B btw was awesome and sent me free replacement clamps/bolts despite the fact I bought these mufflers used from a forum member.
I used stainless steel band clamps. No pipe distortion, no movement
I also used the SS band clamps on my PRT's they are much better than the clamps provided by B&B but I still have the sagging tip syndrome on the pass side and I tightened the hell out of the band clamp???
I had this problem on one side until I slid the clamp more towards the edge of the pipe opening (towards the inside/middle of the vehicle) and then tightened it down. If you have the clamp too deep on the muffler you will just be tightening the clamp onto solid steel. You have to get the clamp toward the edge where the slits are cut into the mating portion of the muffler.
Thanks for the advice all! I'm going to try Cpig's idea 1st, then off to the welder if I can't fix it. Right now, I keep the C clamp close to the edge of the pipe opening, but I could move it so it overhangs slightly on the slits. I'll try that tomorrow.
Rather than welding, drill a 1/16" hole where both pipes overlap and install a small SS sheet metal screw. Then you can easily disassemble everything in the future, if the need arises.
