Default Anyone else ever had a clutch explosion??

As I was testing out my new nitrous system the other day, my clutch or flywheel, pressure plate exploded... it was a loud bang... As I reved through 1st and went for 2nd gear and let off the clutch and pressed on the gas the clutch let go.... I made at least 6 nitrous runs after this happned.

It was the wost experience in my C5 that ive ever had.... hopefully it hasent happned to many of you.... its not a good experience.

All that appears to be broken is, the passanger side wiper the plastic piece below the wipers, the wiper controls below the plastic piece, windshield, a piece on my FAST manifold where the brake booster connects to, some nitrous wiring, bellhousing top and bottom, rear tail light harness, whole clutch assembley flywheel pressureplate ect...

I guess over all I was lucky that I still have my ankles and feet. Nothing came through the firewall or floorboards.

Is there anything outthere for the C5's bellhouseing that will prevent an explosion like this, or at least something to minimize the damage to other parts around the clutch assembley.

Thanks....

Yes there are special bell housings, made for racing, and there are blankets that go over the bell housing, these are required by certain sanctioning bodies when racing, I don't know where to get them any more as I don't race any more, but I'm sure companies like Summit Racing, etc. carry these items.

I cracked the hub in the clutch disc in two places, but damn, sounds like you went for the gusto There are some clutch bellhousing blackets that may fit the C5, but theres no real specialty applications that I know of.

Yeah, try building a race car instead of ticking time bomb, sweetheart.

Glad you made it out without any injuries. That is a serious wake up call! I'm also confused how you kept running it after the clutch or flywheel was gone?

Cows may come, cows may go but the bull in this place goes on forever. Blows the clutch and keeps on running.

I am glad you are okay and there was not more damage. This is exactly why I do not run Nitrous, JMO that's all not saying you are wrong to run it, it's jut I have read to many stories like this, not just for Vettes but other cars too. Seen too many cars blow, people mis-shift, etc etc
NOS is for drag and race cars, not street cars,,go ahead and flame away if you want.

I hope you get everything fixed and up and running soon.

Good luck

Running nitrous is ok if you have the car tuned properly and have some common sense. When you have someone build you a ticking time bomb you get your hood blown off and your feet cut off. BOOOOOOOOOM!

I'm calling you out as the biggest artist on this board. If your "whole clutch assembley flywheel pressureplate" was destroyed, there is no way the car will move (except on a flatbed).

And BTW, what sort of d**khead would make 6 nitrous passes after seeing the damage done by an underhood/body explosion. IMO you deserve to lose your legs to stop you from racing anymore... Maybe this will stop you from killing an innocent person in the future.

sounds like what he's describing is an explosion of fuel puddling in the intake. Even so, if the plastic intake manifold was destroyed... no more driving.. duh

Sweetheart, don't be bitter. It's safe to assume that you'll never own a Viper on a janitor's salary so you'll just have to envy mine. Don't worry about my money. I still have enough to buy you a case of Mr. Clean.
