Default TCS problem- code C1287

Sweden calling! I have a 1999 C5 Convertible. Every time I use my car, after 1-20 minutes, I will get this message: “Service active handling”/”Service vehicle soon” and the “Traction control light” will come on. In the code list I will get C1287 H Steering Sensor Rate Malfunction and even some times a C1286 H Steering Sensor Bias Malfunction. If I stop the car and turn off the ignition and then restart it everything seems to be fine again. The problem seems not appear when I drive at a steady speed on the highway. Beside that it can happen whenever. It will not appear if I hit a bump, accelerate or brake but mostly “whenever”. I have cleaned the “grounds” at the top of the wheel well, the cables going to the sensors at the wheels, the connections on the sensors, nothing helps. This is rather irritating and is driving me crazy. Please, anyone, what more can I do? Thanks.

I would have someone double-check your alignment specs. If the steering wheel isn't straight, while you are driving straight it will set off code(s). Also, I was getting C1286, C1287 and C1288. Not always C1286 or C1288, but C1287 seemed to popup quite a bit. The problem turned out to be the connector going into my steering sensor! It wasn't plugged all the way in. It's at the base of the steering column where it goes through the firewall (on the cabin side). That also is worth a check!
