I have a 99 C5. When the car is cold (in the mornings on my way to work and in the evenings on the way home) and I am accelerating there is a chirping sound coming from around the belts. I only hear it wen my foot is on the gas. This goes on for maybe 5 miles or until I accelerate for 40+ miles and hours or so steadily and then it goes away. I am not mechanically inclined at all. Two questions. First does anyone know what this is. Secondly, I have ordered a C6 and probably will have it in Nov. sometime. Is this something I have to fix or should I wait and trade it in that way? Thanks, Joy
Could be the S-belt... Years ago a chirp started when I first started the car.. it turned out to be the water pump. I recently had a chirping when I let out the clutch... turned out to be the main bearing in the torque tube... now the TT failed and I have to install a new one tomorrow. Hopefully that wont be your problem.
Could be that you need a new belt or one of your tensioners is weak. Should be a fairly easy inexpensive fix. Might try replacing your belts first since they are cheap, then if that doesnt solve the problem look into the tensioners. There is a seperate belt and tensioner for the main serpentine belt and A/C.
Hope this helps.

have wondered the same thing. our y2k a4 coupe chirps or sqeaks for the 1st 10 min from a cold startup. once the car hits operating temp, the chirp/squeak stops. car runs perfectly. the noise is a pita & a little embarrassing when one starts out in the morning. bub

if there's no harm in the noise & the car otherwise runs perfectly, then perhaps it's no big deal. my gut sense however is that anytime a car makes a noise that it probably shouldn't make, that it's telling you something needs fixed. bub
