I have read a lot on crossover "H" pipes and know that there are a lot of vendors out there pushing their products. However, it seems that Bassani looks to put out a nice product. So, how does this crossover pipe, or as some call it "H" pipe affect exhaust? They all talk about the exhaust pulses, so does this mean it scavanges the exhaust gases better, sound different, etc.? Is is worth even installing one with stock mufflers? My engine is not modified except for the K&N air stock version air filter. As far as I can tell, my exhaust is OEM on my '98 automatic and I like the sound just the way it is--not too loud but not too quiet, but will talk to you when you stand on it. Thanks. I would, however, consider installing a performance chip if I had to, but again, GM did a good job with the Corvette straight from the showroom.
The X pipe really doesnt add any HP. Ok well it might do maybe 1 or 2. You may not notice much difference on an OEM exhaust, but on an aftermarket it will smooth out the idle sound and reduce the popping on deceleration. What I did was take my OEM mufflers and cut them open, emptied the insides and welded them back together. The idle was very motorboaty, and had popping on decel. The X pipe smoothed over the idle and eliminated 95% of the popping.
If you stand behind your car even with the OEM mufflers, you hear how the exhaust sounds like its chuffing or fluttering. An X pipe will smooth this out.
Some will tell you the X pipe was a waste of money. In my opinion I wish the X pipe came OEM from the factory. I like refined sounds and the X pipe smoothed out the idle, so the X pipe was definately worth it to me.
I installed an x-pipe and would only recommend one to you if you do a cat back and then only if you do not like the sound of the h-pipe or are heavy into performance. The h-pipe that you have in your car now will gurgle and pop the x-pipe smoothes it out It may get you better HP but I agree with eRiCdWoNg you may get 1 or 2 HP. I also think that all x-pipes are the same so go for the lowest price you can find. It is interesting when we cut out the h-pipe the cross over pipe has an inside opening of only about ½ inch makes you kind of wonder why it is there and what it really does.
