So I'm on my way home from a softball tourney up north in Mio, MI, and as I near the house, I've got a few on-and-off ramps to play with. Once I'm in 2nd gear, I thought I'd "clear out the injectors" with a WOT run or two. Radio's off (I like the music from the BB's better); as RPM's reach the upper range, I hear a high pinging coming from the engine bay. It's metallic-sounding, like metal tapping metal. No power loss, no signs of anything amiss. The only time I hear it is on WOT runs, and only above 4500 RPM's. Could this be engine knock? Never heard it before, so I don't know what knock sounds like. I know what "deiseling" sounds like, but this ain't it. Only fuel I run is Sunoco 94 or BP 93.

Advice appreciated!
I had a simlar problem with my 99 FRC. NEVER could get it resolved so I got rid of the car and got an 02. It was definitely a "HEAT" related problem. Do you have a 99? I've had others with 99 year C5s that have had the same issue. Could be related!?

From what I have read with the 99' and earlier LS1's pinging problem is due to the PCV. I think I would have to agree with the person above that said it's time to decarbon your motor. It seems heat related, but it's because the carbon on top of the piston doesn't start becoming a glow plug until the engine warms up.
Thanks for the replies, all. The vette's a 2001, just a tick over 23k miles on it. All I've run in it is 93 octane or better. Engine temp's during this trip never got above 200F, in fact she sits around 190F on the highway.
Bingo, Just solved my problem! I have been running tuner SW and doing a myrid of different runs. I don't have ping that you can hear and I don't have it that often. If I am running say 60 or 80 and punch it I get a couple of KRs nothing to write home about, but they do pull the timing back. From a standing start, nothing, they all seem to be rolling and when warm. Zounds Like a da katch kan is in my future!
It does not do it all the time, just like they said above 4K, hot/warm, and I pulled the manifold a few weeks ago and I did have to clean the oil out of the TB, it was noticeable!

Is it an early '01? Any oil consumption issues?
I had a similar problem on my '01 and attributed it to carbon buildup as a result of oil blowby (due to known ring issues with the early '01s)
I think a decarb would be a fast, easy thing to do.
This specific Tech Tip link for decarbing your engine has been available for over two years, and, is a very helpful link complete with pics. And, for DIY's, it really works. Good Luck.
I'm thinking about doing this procedure to an '01 that I just picked up.
I have a bit of a rough idle and some pinging at WOT (which just recently started - bad gas maybe)?
So... my question is: is it possible for this procedure to damage the cat at all?

Being its a '01 and if there is a large carbon buildup best is if you use the GM topdown product where you pull the sparkplugs and pour the cleaner in and let it set overnight.
Once cylinders and pistons tops are clean to keep it that way if you add water injection kit it not only gives you more performance but also will prevent carbon buildup
never had a problem with my 98 w 90k, but I did stay at a Holiday in last night. J/K
I install a catch cam mod for a whopping $30 in parts from Menards and was suprised to see the amount of oil that collects when you are on it only in the higher RPMs, lower RPM spirted driving and normal driving exibited no oil in catch can.
