Did a search, but inconclusive. Since we do not follow the manual for the oil change interval (most of us anyway), what is the interval I should follow for the trans. I've always used 30k. What cost should I expect from the dealer for the change and do I have to include the diff? I never do the diff.

No racing, 80% highway 2002 A4, 27,000 miles.
Expect to pay plenty at dealer $200+.But GM only requires you to change A4 tranny fluid at 100,000. Mi. for normal driving conditions. 50,000 Mi for severe conditions. This will satisfy the GM warranty. No need to change Diff.
Change it to synthetic (any brand name will do-Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil, etc.)
you will "feel" the difference in smoother shifting since stock fluid is not synthetic. Rear diff not as critical. I changed all my fluids to Amsoil synthetic and installed magnetic drain plugs after it was broken-in. Easy to do yourself-do a search to see how to jack the car up and change it.
Thanks. What I saw in archives was disconnecting the top trans hose from the rad and letting a gallon pump into a catch can, then refilling with synthetic and doing it again. Said nothing about doing the filter or dropping the pan. This doesn't seem like the right method as you would be comingling the synthetic with the other and then wouldn't everything drop out when you drop the pan?
Most transmission fluids are compatible with synthetic...
and since it will not all drain-out when you drop the pan, you will only be replacing a little over 1/3 of it. Some people drain and fill at he same time by using the hoses that connect to the radiator, but I do it the old way-one drainoan at a time. I like Amsoil products, but others are good too. Good luck with the change.
