Default throttle delay 1999 coupe

My buddy just bought a 1999 fully loaded automatic transmission coupe. The car has about 52000 miles and was taken care of pretty well. I have a 88 Auto C4 and when I stomp on the throttle there is no delay - it just goes.

I drove his today (with traction control on and off) and there is a huge delay before the transmission kicks down and the car takes off.

It was kind of messed up - I made a 90 deg corner and mashed the throttle half way through the turn and it didn't start accelerating until I was almost through the turn.

Do you guys have any ideas on what to look at to resolve/correct this

Hummm, I can tell you I have an A4 and have no delay. Maybe someone will chime in and add something.

I can actually relate to what you are saying and would be interested if anyone has any thoughts on this. I previously owned a 2002 Camaro Z28 with an A4 and 2.73 gears. I had cold air induction, but that was the only mod. Then I went out and bought my 98 C5 A4 with the 2.73 gears. I noticed that the car had a little more delay in it when I stepped on the gas, almost like a softer pedal. I wouldn't say it was a huge difference, but it was a noticeably different pedal feel. Almost gave you the feeling that the car was slower...but I figure it's the same engine, same gears, makes no sense. It's gotta be just as quick. I heard somewhere though it has to do with the fact that these cars are drive by wire, i.e., the throttle is electronically controlled and not through a cable. I don't know if this would give a different pedal feel or not. I've had the car for a year now and don't notice it any more, but maybe that's because I got rid of the 2.73 gears and got 3.42s.

Just a guess, but sounds like the air/fuel mixture is not responding as quickly to the accelerator input (electronic input). So... I would first check the intake starting with the air filter and then MAF sensor (also check for codes first). If the MAF is not responding quick enough to the increase airflow, it could be telling the PCM to hold back the fuel increase. It could be either to a restriction in the filter (clogged) or the MAF may be fouled - by any chance was an oiled air filter used?

My '98 SS started to get this problem. My MAF was dirty or faulty. When I switched the old MAF with a new one, throttle response was back to normal. I would guess it is the MAF, especially if there is a K&N filter. The oil from the K&N filter will get sucked onto the MAF wires causing them to receive inaccurate readings.

If this ever happens again, all you have to do is clean your MAF sensor with brake clean. It cleans it perfectly. Every time I clean and reoil my K&N I wait a couple days then pull out the MAF and spray it.

My 2004 A4 seemed to have a delay on hard acceleration until I used a Predator tuner. It might have somthing to do with the Torque control taht the tuner turnes off

The torque management system is more intrusive on some A4s than others, it seems.

I have done some reading on Torque Management. I also saw mention about holding the active handleing button for 5 seconds to disable it - does this apply to the '99 model?

More than likely you don't have AH on a '99. Probably just traction control.

Yes some 99 come with AH and you do hold the button to disable it. Also try turning off the TC and hold the button for 5 second and turn on the competive Mod and see what she does.

---> Traction control. There you go. Be careful with those hard 90 degree corners and "mashing" the throttle.
