Does the PCM use the front wheel sensors in its speed calculation

no. The vehicle speed comes from a sensor in the rear carrier.
Though there are sensors at all wheels for the traction control and active handling systems.

I got the following from Hib Halverson. Is this what you mean by "in the rear carrier?
Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS)---the device that senses vehicle speed. It screws
into the transmission where speedometer gears were in the old days.

no. Hib is incorrect here (hey; he's only human like the rest of us
)
the VSS sensor for the
C5 is located in the rear differential (which is actually called the "carrier" on the C5).
It is not located in the transmission on the C5.

Isn't that the reason you don't need to adjust the speedo when you get new gears?

Correct. The speedo will be correct when you change diff gears. And if you have an automatic tranny, you will need to have your computer reprogrammed for new shift points if you put in a different ratio of differential gear.
