SuperMAXX install questions
from a TBYRNE group purchase (Thanks Carol!) and will look to get started with install very soon. Was wondering if, other than the included directions, there were any problems that I might run into during install?Did any of you purchase new O2 sensors? My O2 sensors have about 23k miles on them. I have an '01 Z.
Thanks!
after removal of the stock exhaust you may want to clean out the header bolt threads in the block with a 8mm x 1.25 tap.
Passenger side
Before installing new headers, add zip-ties to small holes in frame on passenger side (leave zip-tie as a large loop to be used to zip-tie 02 wire after header is in place).
I had to remove coils and valve cover for clearance, some people don't. I also had to unbolt the starter. If you do have to unbolt the starter, you will need to tighten the bolts BEFORE you install & tighten the new header bolts.
I also had to pry the air-conditioning line out of the way, only by about 1 inch or less.
Driver side
Car had to be about 22 to 23 inches in the air (floor to frame)
Unbolt the ground wire from the engine block.
I jacked the engine up maybe 1/2'' as described in LS1HOWTO.com
Zip-tie the 02 wire to the brake line.
Other than these items, I had no problems. I did the install by myself. Took about 20 hours total, including several trips to the auto parts store. Use the instructions on LS1HOWTO.com, they list bolt sizes and torque values. Take your time and good luck!
Used existing 02 sensors. The Dynatech exhaust gaskets are as good as factory. Re-use existing valve cover gaskets.

Mostly followed the instructions that came with the set and also looked at 97vette.com for some reference (although it's not a Supermaxx install).
Pretty straight forward. Snaking the headers in is the trickiest part, but take your time, and keep trying, they will go.
Passenger side had to unbolt the starter (then bolt it back up before bolting the header in, as mentioned above).
Driver side, just watch the ground strap, O2 wires and fuel line. Tight squeeze past them. Didn't have to remove the steering shaft.
Watch your O2 sensor harness routing (particularly on the fronts) so they don't lay on the headers. We ended up drilling a couple holes in the tunnel reinforcement plate, and wire tieing them up to that to make sure the connectors don't lay on the headers.
The instructions aren't real good with telling you which bolts are used for what. After I was done I realized the black (hardened) bolts and flanged nuts for the muffler flanges. Again, a little boneheadedness on my part.
Good luck. It's not so bad. The car sounds MEAN now when it revs!
Oh, I have a 99 Hardtop with 32K miles and I reused all my O2 sensors with no problems.
