Well the other night I was heading home and ran across a single turbo Supra (T78) that I have seen on my local boards. Long story short I was running through the gears HARD and on the 3-4 something in the driveline went, and went bad.
The Motor is fine (thank god) but it grinds and rattles seriously loud. So loud in fact that at 115 the guy in the supra, under full throttle and two lanes over and 2 cars back could hear it. It almost sounds like something is dragging on the ground but it's not. If I try to put it in gear and I have nothing it just grinds and rattles even more. In Neutral while I was rolling it didn;t grind it just had that dragging sound? My initial thoughts are tranny, or maybe rear diff, but it was so loud and so aluminum sounding, and the noise "seems" to come from the clutch area but I don't know. Whatever it is, it's bad. Clutch feels good still and I'm leaking no more fluid then It ever did before from the rear of the car. Before I take it up to RAFT racing to get it fixed, any idea's?
With all the racket you mention I suspect you have some mechanical damage somewhere.
If, while not moving with the engine running, your car sounds pretty near normal, check:
Engine:
Oil pressure
Oil color
Transmission:
Drain transmission and inspect for metal debris. It's possible you lost a shifting fork or a clutch plate. If everything looks good, no extra metal, replace with new fluid and gently see if you have all 6 gears including reverse.
Look at the rear differential in the respect. It's a process of elimination until you determine the cause.

Engine is fine. Pressure and temps are cool. Still the meanest sounding LS1 in the tri-State area. Just won't move
I talked with Danny (Popp) a bit ago and he diagnosed it in about 2 seconds over the phone but he was preparring to get his daughter on track to race and was talking fast so I didn't hear exactly what he said. Something about a gear cone or some crap like that.
Is there any pools of fluid under the car? Can you push the car if it's in nuetral? In gear?
Well there was always a pool of tranny fluid under the car and it's the same size as before. From a visual inspection all looks intact but obviously it's screwed. I fill the tranny back up every month or so and only drive the car maybe 3 times a month since the one lap. Though I do beat the crap out of the car every chance I get and I do speed shift the 1-2 and 3-4 whenever I'm on it.
The car will roll in neutral and in gear, in neutral at a standstill it sounds normal. If I put it in gear as I disengage the clutch the shifter vibrates a TON and it grinds like a teenager with bruxism.
The clutch pedal feels fine, But I swear the sound is from somewhere near the front of the car and not at the rear by the tranny/diff.
Thoughts? I'm gonna stop by Danny's shop tomorrow but I like to go in slightly more educated then I am right now.
Could've possibly snapped the hub in the clutch disc. The more I think about it, thats exactly what mine did when the hub assembly cracked in three spots

Hmmm. Well I supose better a Clutch then a tranny
But damn I'm sick of clutches. Done 3 of the bastards in two years!! My own fault I suppose. Kinda pisses me off to the point I'd almost prefer it was a diff or a tranny.......Almost.
Could be the clutch or Trans I would guess since only going by description and not hearing the noise. Only way to find out is to take it apart and find out exactly what it is. I would recommend that you upgrade to a better clutch than the Spec though if that indeed turns out to be your problem. I have the Cartek stage 7 clutch and its amazing how much abuse the thing takes. Good luck.

Thanks for your help.
Sounds expensive.
Gee, I'm very sorry to hear that.
Practice, practice, practrice. Keep it up, you'll get there.

Exactly what mine did too. Under extremly light load the clutch worked fine but over 5% throttle or 30mph it sounded like your were missing a shift. Just grindes. The hub was jamming up against the springs but too much pressure it would just free spin. I recomend texstrilla. awsome clutch and awsome service (although i've never needed it since i've had no problems!) Check out my vette pics on the side
Sounds like you broke the driveshaft inside of the torque tube.
At least you can check both that and the clutch at the same time. If the driveshaft is not broke, make sure you check the rubber bushings and bearings on the aft of the driveshaft.
