I have a 98 and the steering has locked, I heard it was recall item , messsage comes up saying "service steering column lock" has anyone else came upon this problem? I can not take it to a dealer as the car is in Australia and I do repairs myself.
There is a sticky on this in either the C5 tech or general section.
A lot of good advice... read it.
The actuator rod gets stuck in the locking plate due to tight tolerances...
Try jerking the wheel hard to the right and left several times.
It might help if someone rocks the car forward and backward as you do so.
In the worst case you may need to disseble the steering column and hit the actuator with a punch to loosen it.
Then install a column lock bypass CLB from covettes of houston or Thunder Racing. It electronically prevents this from happening again...
costs about $50.
Good Luck
