Does anyone have a Blown engine.... If so, this is going to sound pathetic, but what does that mean! Does that mean its supercharged? Is it like a REALLY REALLY powerful cold air intake type deal? I have a video of a C5 corvette with B&B Bullets and the engine is blown. Wow that thing sounds amazing. I am confused on what that actually means. Im still learning....
Well, 'Blown' can have two meanings. First havinig a 'blower' on the engine (a super charger or turbo). There are varying degrees of how much pressure is introduced from a mild 7 pounds per square inch to more than 20 pounds per square inch. A stock high performance engine can take up to about 10 psi without doing damage to the engine. You can easily add 25 percent horsepower or more with a blower without having to build the engine up too much. Serious pressure from the blower requires special engine building techniques and a lot of knowledge and money. Easy on the throttle and keeping the oil clean and cool helps the reliability. But then again what fun is being easy on the throttle.
More pressure puts more stress on connecting piston rods and bearings. Raising the pressure also may cause detonation (ping) if timing is not correct and octane is too low. The higher the pressure, the more the engine is at risk to being the second definition of 'blown' as in blown-up. Pistons can disintegrate from pinging . Also connecting rods can break while the engine is being run at high RPM under stress like when you are racing. When the connecting rods break, the engine has flying pieces of metal that will literally break holes in the block of the engine or out the aluminum head giving another term 'the engine is toast'. I am not an engine builder, just giving you my knowledge that I have read about. If anybody has some more accurate info, please jump in. - Ron
