Well, I went to the track yesterday and came back with some issues. First the clutch was sticking to the floor. Then after my 3rd run the fuel solenoid stuck open on my N20 Kit. Now for my bigger problem.
My car shifts fine into every gear but 3rd. Under normal acceleration it will grind trying to put it into 3rd. All other gears are fine! If I shift to 3rd very slowly it will go in ok. Can someone please give me an idea as to what the cause may be.
Car is 03 ZO6.
Still have stock shifter.
How hard is it to change synchros?
Is there someone who make better ones than GM?
What else should I do if any while working on the synchros?
Ahhh, I feel your pain, exact same thing happened to me last year. The clutch to the floor is probably your hydraulics. Mine did that, recoevered and then eventually sunk to the floor and never came back up.
I did the fix in my garage in the dead of winter. Took me a few days because of waiting for parts to arive and putting the trans together took some time. It wasnt particularly hard, just a pain in the rear cause of the bulkiness of the driveline components and the occasional stuck part.
I replaced the 3rd gear synchro with some from Rockland Standard Gear (rsgear.com). I dont plan to make my car run 10's so it would have been a waste to make the car bulletproof although it woulda been nice just too expensive. The rings on the synchros were all chewed up and rough and would grind especially when it was cold out. I didn't replace any of the other synchros as they felt OK.
So far its been a year and almost 20K miles of daily driven use, the occasional burnout and going to the drag strip. No leaks, no grinds. I'm a happy camper.
I believe someone does make upgraded synchros for the trans, and there are also high performance gears and shafts and forks.
Bottom line, if you're gonna fix the synchro, you gotta remove the driveline, so DO replace the clutch AND the hydraulics (master and slave cylinder), that way you'll fix the lazy pedal syndrome. Also, you may want to strongly consider upgraded rear diffy parts, as well as the DTE brace. If you race your car hard, consider the DTE diffy cooler.
