Default Blinkers not working... weird.. please read

This has happened several times today. I'll be driving my car and turn the blinker on and they will work fine. I go a little bit down the road and they wont work, And the little green arrows you usually see inside the car don't even come on. So I get to work and just think maybe a fuse i blown or something and I'll fix it later. But when I went to drive home the blinkers were working again,,,,,, But then half way home they stopped working. I dont know whats up... HELP.

I'm headed down the same road with ya. From what I've seen on here (and I just checked this Friday) the Hazard (4-way flasher) switch does this to the turn signal when it starts going bad. Next time it quits working, try hitting the hazards. I did this last night on the way home and they started working normally again. Up till then I thought I had a loose wire somewhere.
Maybe someone else will chime in with some other suspects.

Yup, definately the turn signal relay, which by the way is located behind the hazard switch. The relay is only about $30 (10406626), but is kinda a pain to remove. You should be able to get it out from the front without having to remove the dash pad....

It's a dual purpose switch controlling both the turn signals and the 4-ways..........

THANKS!
I take it this is a Stealership only part? (Thanks for the part# BTW) Or does anyone know of a cheaper alternative source? (Autozone, Pep Boys, etc...)

Does anyone have a link to the easiest way to install? Or pics of their install?

The $30 price quote is from GM Parts direct. I imagine getting it direct from the dealership will be more. Haven't tried to get it anywhere else, as I think this is a reasonable price. Here's a link to the install, taking out the relay from the front, rather than removing the dash.

Thanks!

Only scary part is the picture of a chisel right in front of the dash.

Will definitely have to be careful on that part.

Yea I'd definately wait to have the victory beers until after the hammer and chisel portion of the installation is completed.

You might want to wait on that change out. My turn signals went out just like yours did and I found that if I just "exercised" the hazard switch a bunch of times (push the hazard button in over and over again), the turn signals work reliably again. The turn signals started to act intermittently once again a few weeks later, but after a few more punches on the hazard switch, they came back on line and haven't failed since. It seems that when the hazard switch is depressed it overrides the turn signal by disconnecting a contact. However, when you work the hazard switch, it cleans the contacts for you if you push it enough times.

Give it a try before you rip apart your dash unnecessarily......

Its only a matter of time before you will have to change out the haz switch. Blinkers will continue to work randomly and turning on the haz switch will fix it temporarily (sort of and it gets worse with time).

I did the "quick" fix without removing the dash pad and using the big screw driver to pound out the bad switch. Only hard part was getting the new switch up and aligned...its a real PITA and requires patience and little fingers and arms. Knocking out the old switch sounds terrible but is one quick pound and its out.

After living for 6 months with the bad switch and not knowing when the blinkers were going to work or not it is worth the effort to remove the bezel....pound the switch out because there is no doubt in my mind now that my blinkers will work. Just do it. Don't wait.

I've been going for over 6 months with no more turn signal problems since I "cleaned" it by pushing in the hazard button repeatedly, so I wouldn't be so quick to change it out.........

There is another possibility, but it depends on how the turn signals are acting when they quit.

When you say they stop working, are you saying that the green indicators on the dash only stop working or do you mean that both the actual turn signals and the green indicators stop working?

If both stop working, I concur with the other suggestions already offered related to the flasher relay. If only the dash indicators stop and the external turn signals continue to operate, there is another possibility.

Do a search in active and archives of "hazard switch" and you can find a lot of information on replacement.
