Default Two More Newbie Questions

Hi guys,

2 more questions for you:

1) I have been reading about the rear end seal leak on this forum. How common is it? And what is the best way to determine if this seal is bad? I'm assuming I can lift the car and just inspect for fluid? Where's the most common leak area?

2) I have noticed that when taking right hand turns, I get a "clunk" from the rear of the car. No idea what it could be. Anyone?

Thanks for the help! This is on an 01 too.

Welcome to the forum. I too am a C5 newbie and this forum is a great place for information.

For question number one, there are actually two places where the seal can leak. My car had the seals replaced under warranty so I hjave avoided the problem, hopefully. Search this forum as there are some earlier postings with illustrations showing the areas prone to leaking, with information on repair procedures.

On mine the rear seal leaked from the left hand side of the housing (that's the left as if you were sitting on the groud looking at it from the rear of the car). It's pretty hard to miss. If you have a leak, you'll see drops on the ground where you park the car, too.

As for the clunk, I had that too and it turns out that having the diff fluid changed and some Positraction fluid put in cured the problem. I had a hard time believing that a flud change could eliminate a clunking noise, but it did. Most around here will agree that having the diff fluid changed every 30K or so is a good idea.

It's also possible that your car has already leaked most of the diff fluid, so if you're hearing a clunk and but not seeing any fluid leaking, it's probably a good idea to get it checked.

Congrats on the car and enjoy! I tell you, once I got those two issues resolved on my car I enjoyed it SO much more -- the peace of mind is priceless.

It's certainly possible that the fluid is low. I will be changing the fluid and looking for the leak as well.

Thanks for the help!
